The week after Christmas

Planning on going on holidays any day after Christmas so the 26th/27th/28th with DH, his parents and our two kids. They're coming to stay with us for nearly a month and are quite hard going so the idea is to break up their stay with a trip.

Anyone gone away this time of year and have any suggestions? Will consider anything.. sun, snow (not skiing, they're old), culture, Disneyland! We're looking at lanzarote maybe. Considered a cruise but extortionate prices.

Kids are 8 and 10. Thank you

Someone once suggested Madeira for this time of year. She said there are fireworks in Funchal, but I am not sure if that would be Christmas or New Year. She stopped there as part of a cruise. I thought it sounded great for winter.

I would love to go away for this week and have been pricing the Canaries for a week. It's hugely expensive. 2 adults, 2 kids 16 and 13 is around 8-10,000 AI for an average looking 4 *. I found a Med cruise on vivavoyage.co.uk with Costa. It was £2500 with a deluxe balcony cabin, drinks package etc. Plus flights ( about a grand for 4) You might have more space from each other in a cruise also, than if you were in a resort in Lanzarote. Obviously the weather would be better in the Canaries than the Med, but the cruise would have more to do and should be nice and mild for sightseeing etc. Now to convince my family....

Excellent idea re: the cruise! The oldies could explore the towns/cities and i could stay onboard with the kids if they fancied a pool day, never been on a cruise before so I'll look into that. Thank you.

I think once i clicked on the Amsterdam link i realised i don't want to be cold on my holidays! At least that's that style of trip ruled out. Thank you though

You could take a look at Iglu for cruise ideas.

We've been a few times that week to Nerja. Fly into Malaga and hire a car. We used to stay in an apartment but with a larger group you could rent a villa. Weather is variable - mostly we've been able to wear tee shirts during the day, but gets very chilly in the evening. You wouldn't want to go swimming .

We have driven up to Granada for the day, but be warned, it was a lot colder then by the coast . Frigliana is nice too, or you could go into Malaga .

I took my kids on a cruise a couple years ago, left on 26th. The cruise was absolutely packed, I thought it would be quiet but apparently this week is hugely popular for travel. Not to put you off at all, I just had no idea so would have appreciated a heads up before going myself.
Still a great idea to break up a long visit from parents!

Thanks everyone. I had a good look at cruises but seems like i've left it a bit late and would be mega expensive. Definitely consider it for future PIL visits (invasions!). Think we're going to go somewhere in the Canary Islands. Also mega expensive, must be the time of year.
