Lake District Recommendations Please

Hi

Looking for a two night break in the Lake District preferably Windermere for me and my husband.

I have looked at the following

Cragwood
Lindeth Howe
Broakoaks
Applegarth Villa and Restaurant ( really like the look of this one, but the evening meals look tiny)
Merewood
Belsfield

If anyone has any experience of any of the above or any other recommendations they would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks
Mia

Thank you. I have looked at that website previously but was hoping to hear from people who have personal experience.

Thanks
Mia

It looks beautiful but unfortunately out of our price range. We are looking at around £400

I was leaning towards Applegarth but as I say the meals look tiny.

Thanks
Mia

I stayed in applegarth, the rooms are lovely and location is perfect right in the centre of Windermere but set away from the main road so it’s super quiet, but you are literally seconds walk away from a great selection of restaurants, so don’t need to eat at the hotel!! Just do B&B Breakfast was great though.

You can also walk into Bowness in about 15-20min depending on fitness and again a big selection of bars and restaurants there. If you only eat at the hotel you’re missing out even if the food is good :)

I haven’t stayed in the centre of Windermere, and although we go up regularly we usually camp. But, I have stayed in both the Swan at Grasmere and the Swan at Newbury Bridge, and both are really lovely - especially the Swan at Newby Bridge. Their fish pie was to die for.

We have just booked Cedar Manor and Forest Side for my birthday trip next month! Obviously I cant recommend yet but both have fabulous reviews.

MrsHamlet · 18/10/2023 19:57

Forest side is incredible but it's not cheap

Belsfield was style over substance - we were very disappointed with it. I wouldn't go there again.

Hi

Can I ask what you mean by that?
I’m so glad I checked here as that had moved to the top of my list. I almost booked it last night!

We stayed in Merewood for our post wedding mini-moon in November 2018. It was soooo beautiful. Not as pretty outside as Cragwood but oh my gosh the interior is just stunning. The Edwardian bar was what sold it to us. It was everything we wanted from a cosy autumnal Lake District stay. The breakfast was utterly delicious, the room was comfortable and the staff were so helpful. I'd highly recommend it. Bonus points for a field of highland coos nearby

Stayed at the Salutation in Ambleside, it was great but I wasn't paying!
Personally we prefer Keswick

Colinswheels · 22/10/2023 19:52

Sorry, I know it's not on your list but The Gilpin is fabulous.

Hi @meelee20119 - if you mean the Bellsfield, we found it lacking in atmosphere, hardly any staff, and a poor room (despite us booking a suite type room with a view of the lake). The gardens were unkempt - just felt like they had the best position in the town so thought they didn't have to try hard.

BasiliskStare · 28/10/2023 00:20

@PauliesWalnuts My Parents and Aunties recomemend the Swan at Newby Bridge - the only downside is you can't walk to a little town village but the location is pretty. I have not stayed there my self but I suspect less expensive than some central Windermere hotels.

uggmum · 28/10/2023 00:36

Secret escapes have some good Lake District hotel at present

catnipevergreen · 28/10/2023 06:10

Can recommend the Swan at Newby Bridge - lovely hotel and location. Ulverston isn't too far away which has some lovely shops and restaurants.

MunchkinExpress · 28/10/2023 09:40

Check Secret Escapes

BasiliskStare · 28/10/2023 14:41

And @catnipevergreen The Laurel and Hardy museum ( I think I am right there ) which is worth a giggle and an hour .
