Places like French Riviera

DH and I absolutely love the French Riviera, particularly Nice, Antibes, Menton, Eze. Our favourite of all was Antibes. We have been many times and next year we’d like to go somewhere different but with the same sort of feel. The things we liked about it were;

  • the old town
  • no big resort type hotels
  • busy market, great for people watching at a nearby cafe
  • excellent transport along the riviera
  • nice family feel about it, no lager louts for example
  • beautiful beaches
  • nice port

is there anywhere you have been that’s had a similar feel to Antibes or any other French Riviera town?

Italy might work, very family friendly and good train system. In Sicily Taormina is really nice though would be very busy mid summer, we went in September. Amalfi coast might work too. Or you can easily get between places like Venice Florence Pisa Rome on train.

The east coast of Sicily, especially Taormina, Catania and Syracuse.
Also, the Amalfi coast and the Cinque Terra coast (including Genoa).

Thank you, I will look in to all of these options. We would be planning to go in September

I am less sure about this one as we only spent one day in Porto on way back to Azores but possibly area between Porto and Lisbon.

Croatia particularly Split ad along the coast there

Stresa in Lake Maggiore is gorgeous

Cazziebo · 12/10/2023 12:23

San Sebastian?

MissAmbrosia · 13/10/2023 11:23

We're just back from Sicily - Ortigia is very Antibes like, but without the beach and Taormina is just stunning. I know it gets busy in the summer but wasn't too bad at all in September - a couple of days there were cruises in but they all leave late afternoon. We did trips to Castelmola and the Godfather villages. Weather and food were fabulous.

Or the Cinque Terre villages and neighbouring towns - Sestri Levante/Levanto have lovely beaches and you can use the train to get up and down the coast easily.

Also, I'm looking at Puglia for next year and places like Polignano and Monopoli also seem to meet this brief.

Thanks all for the recommendations.

I really like the look of Biarritz!

Biarritz is lovely. You can get the train to Bayonne, St Jean de Luz and San Sebastian from there

callmesaddy · 09/05/2024 15:57

Would you mind sharing where you ended up going & if you liked it? Thanks!

Seeingyellow · 09/05/2024 16:40

Corsica is lovely.

Cross into Italy after Menton and drive up to San Remo. It's really lovely and comfortingly lacking in lager louts. From there you could also go and explore Bussana Vecchia which is truly amazing.
