Tenerife - where to go

I've never been to Tenerife but am planning on going early April with my partner. We are late 40s, looking for chilled out resort with a nice beach, attractive little town centre and easygoing cafes and bars. Not too complicated a journey from the southern airport. Would really appreciate recommendations. Thanks

Puerto de la Cruz is our favourite town by far.

The main town still feels very Spanish, and it's far from the Benidorm/ladsladslads vibe in some of the southern towns.

It also has the best restaurant on the island, El taller seve diaz.

friendlycat · 06/10/2023 20:07

Take a look at Los Gigantes.

If you fancy PDC let me know and I'll DM you a bunch of recommendations, we go there every year.

Puerto de La Cruz is my favourite too.

it’s a bit of a distance from the airport but very cheap and easy by bus

It is easy! We usually hire a car which works out the same as the bus transfer and then we have a drive about.

So many great bars and restaurants in PDC. I love Bar Alberto that overlooks the whole town and ocean and costs about 3 euro for a campari soda the size of a toddler.

myjohnnywasasaint · 06/10/2023 21:11

Ooh and La Fragata on the seafront where all of the older residents bring their dogs on an evening for a bench chats and the dogs all have scraps or try to leg it into the sea! I love that bar for the scene watching.

OP, this isn't an old people place, but I think you need to be 35 min to enjoy it. If you're 22 go to the south of the island.

But DH and I are introverts in our late 30s and we love PDC, it's my Disneyland.

Royal Sun apartments in Los Gigantes, outstanding views, top of the hill so a way from the main tourist town so its quiet but a short walk or taxi ride. Small black beach, the sand is super soft and there are plenty of fish to see snorkeling. The marina does lots of trips whale watching, kayaking, paddle boarding etc. Bus station that gives good access to the rest if the island.

You can book independently or via Tui so you get the transfers and excursions if you don't want to book those yourself.
The rooms have self catering facilities with a shop on site but the hotel restaurants are great. The hotel artments are large with a big balcony.

I was coming on to suggest either Puerto de la Cruz or Los Gigantes so second PPs’ recommendations of these

xyz111 · 06/10/2023 21:49

Make sure you stay in the southern part of the island. The north side can be cloudy and chilly.

El Medano.
Large town 10 mins from Tenerife Sur airport. Long , sandy (not pebbly) beach. Lots of bars and restaurants. Popular with kite surfers, surfers and swimmers. Nice beach shops. Small supermarkets. No yobs

I second this. Went here this year and I would go back again. Some lovely restaurants in los gigantes and the beach is small but perfect for sunbathing or swimming. Stayed at royal sun and the balconies are massive with amazing views across the town, sea and cliffs. We had a hire car but the journey was quite straight forward and could be done via TUI transfer or taxi. Can't wait to return!

This has been so helpful, thanks everyone! Off to look at accommodation options and will be back. Puerto de la Cruz sounds like the place to be! Will also look at El Medano. Thank you

Cloudy and chilly? We usually go in February or October and it's been 24-30!

But it's certainly not the 28-35 it is down south. Depends how hot you want it. We prefer it to not be too hot, but when we've been in winter it's still been minimum 23.

myjohnnywasasaint · 06/10/2023 22:03

I can highly recommend Puerto Palace in PDC. It's fantastic value for the price. I think it's a 3.8 star on booking.com but we've stayed at other 4 and 5 stars in Tenerife in the last 5 years which were not as nice, so now we go back to Puerto Palace a lot!

We've been about 5 times now, half board is great and the breakfast is great, but the dinners aren't great.

We love this hotel because the outdoor jacuzzi's are hot all year round. The pools are heated, one is cool but the other is much warmer. I just sit in a hot tub mostly 😊

@myjohnnywasasaint would you mind if I DM you? We're looking to go in January.

Thanks

My vote goes to Puerto de la Cruz, too!

Shopgirl1 · 14/11/2023 23:07

Also a fan of Puerto de La cruz

Tatapie · 14/11/2023 23:48

Following as thinking of going in Jan too. Any all inclusive hotels in PDC that anyone can recommend? Ideally near the beach. Thanks .
