Sicily or Corfu?

Planning a holiday for late September / early October next year.

Just myself and DH (possibly plus adult DC) We will be renting a villa / apartment and hiring a car. We like to be somewhere with a bit of peace & quiet and nice views - but also close to/ or on the edge of a small town or village so we can head out for something to eat without too much difficulty and also explore surrounding area - but hopefully on roads that aren't too scary.

Looking more on advice as to which island you would chose and which resort/town/village to stay so we have a better idea in our accommodation search .

We loved San Vito lo Capo in Sicily but everything is FAR away from it so you'd have to do a lot of driving to explore the island and those roads are... not fun.

Sicily without a doubt. If you're flying into Catania then stay on the beach at Mazzaro or Isola Bella and you can take the cable car up into Taormina. Though the driving can be a little crazy - not sure how bad it is compared to Corfu, we've never hired a car there.

Sicily and Corfu are places we've been considering for next year's October holiday., along with Crete and Rhodes. We're leaning towards Corfu: it looks like Corfu.is usually much warmer than Sicily in October (happy to be corrected!) and we've been to Crete and Rhodes albeit it a while ago. Watching this thread with interest!!

Sicily was pretty baking when I went in the summer, and much more off the beaten track than Corfu. Some of the lovely old towns on the south and east of the island are well worth a look. You would need a car though.

Thank you - I should have mentioned we would be flying into Catania if going to Sicily .

End Sept/early Oct as we dont like it too hot. Low-mid 20s is perfect for us .

We would hire a car - DH enjoys driving but I don't enjoy windy roads with steep drops and neither of us would want that type of drive in the dark .

We've just returned from Sardinia which we loved - staying around 5 -10 miles inland from Olbia/ Costa Smeralda.

That''s the kind of temperature you'd be looking at - maybe with the odd shower. We'll be in Sicily end of this week and atm it's forecast around 25°.

If DH enjoys driving he'll be fine - but don't be tempted to drive up into Taormina as the road is exactly what you don't like! The roads up around Mount Etna are good for a drive though, most definitely worth a day trip to drive through the lava fields, it's like another world up there! Sicily is one of my most favourite places 🥰 Fourth visit in 4 years this week.

Sicily is amazing, beautiful towns and fantastic food. We love cefalu and that area. 😍

Catania is perfect for exploring Taormina, Etna, Noto and Siracusa.

Ah - thanks for that - it was Taormina we were looking at .

We are just back from Taormina and Ortigia today. The weather was glorious. And both towns are gorgeous. As PPs said - the roads round Taormina though! I wouldn't want a car, and you have to park on the outskirts anyway. The views are fabulous though. We had an amazing apartment in both places. Temp around 25/27 degrees most days. A couple of evenings where it rained. Taormina is quite busy still even now, mostly during the day when you get cruise passengers in. I loved it though.

MissAmbrosia · 03/10/2023 20:01

We want to go back next year, but I might split between Taormina and Cefalu next time. Ortigia was fab with lovely food but I'd like a bit more beach time.

Glad you enjoyed your trip @MissAmbrosia ! Sicily is completely addictive isn't it 😍

It was amazing. Will post a review and some pics when I get chance.
