Before Disney - Texas or Washington DC

We are going to Disney World next August and looking at flights it's cheaper for us to fly via Washington or Texas.

I was thinking of doing 2-3 days somewhere else before. Which would you do? I'd love to go to Texas but it looks like you would need a decent chunk of time? Any suggestions?

DC the various Smithsonian museums are amazing (along with the other museums). Just my 2¢s.

But it's going to be hot and humid as all get out on your trip no matter where you layover. So pace yourself.

Where in Texas? It's kind of large!

HermioneWeasley · 01/10/2023 13:18

Texas is big and several hours in the wrong direction. I’d do DC

EmmaStone · 01/10/2023 13:27

Definitely DC, it's on the way and loads to do. Is the Texas stopover Dallas? Not v much to do there, plus it's a couple of hours in the wrong direction.

MrsHamlet · 01/10/2023 13:32

Texas is bigger than France!

Kissmas · 01/10/2023 14:20

DC. No brainer

GunboatDiplomacy · 01/10/2023 14:22

DC's far easier to do a mini-break in.

Lizzieregina · 01/10/2023 14:24

DC for sure.

San Antonio in Texas is nice, but I’m sure that’s not where you’d be flying to!

MissDollyMix · 01/10/2023 14:30

DC is a lovely city. Loads to do. Would highly recommend.

ahtred · 01/10/2023 14:36

DC would be more practical and Texas (whichever part) will be hellish (literally) in August.

bloodyeffinnora · 01/10/2023 14:43

we're going to new orleans first, but just because we've always wanted to go there so not sure if it would be any cheaper, but just a thought

Have you looked into flying into Orlando and out of New York or Washington? The internal flights are easy and cheap. Rather than home from Florida

Shopfront · 01/10/2023 16:27

Thanks for all the replies.

We could fly into Houston, Dallas or Austin but it sounds like DC is the best option.

Flying into New York is actually the cheapest option but we are keen to save that for a later trip.

If you’re thinking Dallas I’d avoid, went there fairly recently and there’s really not a lot to do/see there at all, I though it was pretty dull, I wouldn’t go back and I wouldn’t recommend it as a holiday destination.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 01/10/2023 16:47

DC would be the better option for a couple of days. It could also be possible to fly from Reagan Washington National Airport (DCs local airport) for the flight down to Orlando.

ahtred · 01/10/2023 16:48

Austin is the best out of those 3 by far, San Antonio is close by too. Houston is the one to avoid, unless you desperately want to see the Space Center. Not much to see in Dallas itself but Fort Worth is great (probably not worth a visit by itself) interesting if you're interested in the JFK assassination.

I think it would be insufferably hot in August though.

DC is incredible, I'm sure you'll have an amazing time there.
