Germany driving stopovers to somewhere in the south.

I'm contemplating a trip to somewhere in Germany- the Black Forest, the Bodensee or possibly Munich way. We'd be taking a car and trailer tent for the main part. But I'm trying to work out possible stopovers for the journey there and back. We're open to either getting a hotel or camping.

If we have a hotel, we don't need to be in the centre of anywhere but we do need parking for both the car and trailer. We'd be quite happy to stay for 1-2 nights, especially if there's something interesting to see. Most of what booking.com etc brings up are city centre hotels. Are there any chains etc which might get us away from this.

If we camp, then we would possibly like to stay in an area for 2-3 nights to make the most of getting the tent up. Again any recommendations would be great.

We'd come from either Calais, or the Hook of Holland.

We did almost this exact trip last year. We stayed at some fab hotels on our route - Hotel Zapa in Singen near Bodensee, Langwiedersee near Munich were the two hotels around that area. I find with booking.com that if you do it by map search you can find some hotels in the middle of nowhere- one of the best hotels in Germany I ever found was literally on a road that felt like it wasn’t near anything but was between two places as a stopover and it was incredible.

We actually drove the southern route round Bodensee through Switzerland and Austria, stopped in Bregenz for an ice cream, then went up to Langwiedersee and on up to Nürnberg. Meant we could do Neuschwanstein castle on the way!
