Tromso in February

We’re booked to go to the Tromso area in February - two nights in the city and two somewhere a bit more remote, about an hour away. We’ll be taking our 8 year old.

We’re planning to do the fjord boat trip and a northern lights tour from Tromso. Then a few more activities at the lodge. My main worry is keeping my daughter warm, especially out in the lodge area and on the northern lights tour. Has anyone got any recommendations of good quality clothing/footwear? There’s so much choice!

Also if anyone has any northern lights tours from Tromso they could recommend that would be brilliant.

Layers! It's not as perishing cold as you expect as the Norway coast is warmer than inland Scandinavia, something to do with the Gulf Stream I think? Just dress for a cold winter's day, hats gloves, base layers to be on the safe side. I would recommend getting spikes for your shoes though - the rubber ones that pull on over the top. It can be icy and they make it much easier to walk.

Tromso is beautiful by the way!

Thank you! Is that the case further in as well? I’d read somewhere it can get to -20/25 when the sun is down and you’re out of the city

I think inland it's colder, depends how far you go. I think it's quite changeable too, we went in Feb and it wasn't too bad and actually more rainy than snowy in some places. But talking to locals they said it can be much colder. Layers, walking boots, good thermal socks and a good coat and you'll be grand 👍
