We're travelling to the north east - kid free - and would like to stay in a lovely hotel - any recommendations?

Dh and I are travelling from the midlands to a wedding in the North East and as my mum has offered to have the dd's, we would love to escape the night before and stay in a hotel somewhere on route. It will be a very rare night off for us so it would be great to be something a bit special. We are thinking maybe round the Thirsk area or somewhere along the A1/M1 corridor north of Leeds, south of Durham. Any suggestions?

Try the Star at Harome. 17 miles from Thirsk.

It is wonderful, great great food. Cosy, special place.

Oulton Hall is a 5* De Vere Hotel, big with spa etc, on the edge of Leeds.

Or the Feversham Arms hotel in Helmsley, nice market town, nice to wander roun, great deli!

The Star looked fantastic - but unfortunately there are no rooms available at all for the night we want . I'm going to check out all your other suggestions - thanks everyone.
