Egypt or Turkey - August 2024

Hi we're looking at booking our next summer holiday for 2 weeks to either Egypt or Turkey. We are a family of 2 adults, 2 teens and 2 children. We want a budget AI hotel and would love to hear recommendations on which country (and area) people preferred and why. Any hotel recommendations would be great but nothing expensive as we need to be really careful with money this year. We want a decent AI with snacks/ice cream available during the day, a clean hotel, nice pools, slides at the pools would be a bonus, close enough to a beach and shops/restaurants, friendly staff, good entertainment for the children during the day and good evening entertainment would be good too. Thank you.

I would recommend Turkey over Egypt in August - Egypt is very, very hot in August, often 40+.

cherryassam · 10/09/2023 19:39

What’s your budget?

Missingmyusername · 10/09/2023 19:42

Olu Deniz, Turkey. But 5* hotel if you do.

Or Croatia 🤷🏼‍♀️ Cyprus not appeal?

Pinkfluffyunicornsandrainbows · 10/09/2023 20:20

@cherryassam
Seen a few for around £6000
Don't really want to spend more than that

We've been to Cyprus but would definitely consider Croatia, it looks lovely.

I wouldn’t go to a budget hotel in either of those countries. 4 or 5 star if you’re going to go. Why not somewhere else like Balearic Islands or Canary Islands?

DramaAlpaca · 10/09/2023 20:27

I've been to both, but with a family I'd choose Turkey. It won't be quite so hot and there's loads to see and do.

Pinkfluffyunicornsandrainbows · 10/09/2023 20:28

One i've been looking at in Egypt is 5 star AI and under £6,000 for 2 weeks.

@Overthebow we've just been to the Canary Islands last month but not done the Balearics yet so i'm definitely open to suggestions.

How do you cope with the heat? Both will be insanely hot in august.

Id look at Greece / the canaries / Balearics

Pinkfluffyunicornsandrainbows · 10/09/2023 20:34

@DramaAlpaca Turkey was our first thought but then we seen a few hotels in Egypt at a good price and started looking into it. It look so beautiful there, all the coral reefs and snorkeling look amazing! We had 40° heat last month in the Canary Islands and it was absolutely fine, we don't mind the heat at all.

I have been to a few really good AI hotels in Turkey. Egyptian AI isn’t quite so good, IMO. There is generally more to do outside the hotels in Turkey. As has been previously mentioned, either destination will be blisteringly hot in August. I love the heat, but struggle with Egypt much beyond late June.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/09/2023 20:36

I;ve been to both and I would pick Turkey 100% over Egypt any time of the year .

Egypt is not a place I'd ever want to go to again for many reasons .

Pinkfluffyunicornsandrainbows · 10/09/2023 20:37

@Mushroo we love the heat, 40° is fine. We all loved the hot weather on holiday last month, the children didn't complain once about it being too hot (which I thought they might when the forecast showed the heatwave)

I am going to Turkey in the October half term holidays next month. The temperature is expected to be mid to hig 20's which is perfect compared to 40 ° in August. I'd suggest that you go in October instead and stick to northern Europe during the summer.

Pinkfluffyunicornsandrainbows · 10/09/2023 20:44

@70isaLimitNotaTarget may I ask what makes you not want to go to Egypt?
I'm definitely going to look into Croatia and the Balearic but I do want to travel to Turkey.

Not been to Turkey but absolutely loved Egypt in august. Not sure if location makes a difference but we were on makadi bay and it was lovely, very hot, but had a breeze

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 10/09/2023 20:53

£6k for 6 people 2 weeks in August? The standards of an AI will be extremely questionable, the food would no doubt be diabolical and the other guests I’d rather not imagine plus the heat will be unbearable. Please look elsewhere

NearlyMonday · 10/09/2023 21:02

Have a look a Tui Blue Gran Azure, Marmaris. I love Egypt, but their idea of AI isn’t brilliant

zeddybrek · 10/09/2023 21:04

I would pick Turkey as Egypt in August is extremely hot.

cherryassam · 10/09/2023 21:13

For that kind of budget, I would echo others about probably sticking to Turkey. Turkey generally does AI very well.

Egypt does have amazing snorkelling but the resorts can be very variable in quality and the food is often not great. I’ve even had complaints about drinks on offer - one client I booked into a resort in Hurghada found out on arrival that the only soft drinks on offer were warm Pepsi, bottled water and coffee made with powdered milk. The only alcohol was an Egyptian branded beer - I had to get them moved whilst they were away.

Saying that there are some really lovely resorts - just be sure to read the reviews very carefully and be wary of fake reviews.

NearlyMonday · 10/09/2023 21:17

I can also recommend Grand Ideal Premium, Marmaris

Starlightstarbright2 · 10/09/2023 21:21

I loved Egypt but would look at Easter … August is good price because it’s so hot

DanceMumTaxi · 10/09/2023 21:35

I know of lots of people who have been poorly in Egypt. We’ve been to Turkey 3 times and always been fine. I’ve found though that the larger all inclusives, big resorts, different pools, water slides etc tend to be out of town. It’s usually a taxi ride into the nearest town. Side in Turkey is lovely, but the best/biggest resorts are not in the town centre.
