Schiphol airport

Anyone know the airport ?
We've got a 4 hour stopover soon, daytime on a Wednesday. Hold luggage should be checked through, but we'll have cabin bags that will be too heavy to carry far.

Do we stay in a transit area, or have to go through Passport Control?

If we do go through PC, any suggestions what we can do to pass the time, please? I don't know whether we'll have to check-in again, or if it's feasible to leave the airport & go anywhere.
Thanks for your help.

There is a train to Amsterdam central which takes 20minutes. You might get an hour there, not sure if that’s worth it with your heavy cabin bags?
I think for four hours just stay in the airport, it’s large with lots of facilities so you’ll be fine.

I personally wouldn’t bother leaving the airport for that length of time - there is plenty of shopping / restaurants and it’s generally quite a nice airport to spend time in. Much nicer than most in the UK

This is a proper airport which is easy to get around and has plenty to do to keep yourselves amused. Whether you have to go through passport control depends on your destination, you should not have to check in again but once again, that depends on your tickets. Either way it is not a big deal at Schiphol - it was designed to be an airport and all of this is usually fairly straightforward.

It depends if you’re flying to a country in the Schengen Zone, and whether you have one ticket or two tickets for your whole journey. I presume you have one ticket since your hold luggage is being taken straight through?

Do not leave the airport, would be my advice. Passport control for non-EU passports took me 1.5 hours to get through last time I was there (July, pre summer holidays). Another hour to get back in again.

Transited through schipol both directions to Norway last year. Was a chaotic dystopian nightmare, sent to the wrong place on several occasions. And I am generally an on the ball traveller who doesn’t need any help. Nearly missed the plane.

So I’d stay in the airport. There are lots of shops etc.

I think the Rijksmuseum have a museum in the airport.

Schipol is huge - you won't need to clear security to transit, but for 4 hours there is plenty to do there and you wouldn't want to go out. The little museum is always worth a visit (and a nice quiet, darkened place out of the hustle)

Many thanks everyone. I've been to & from Schiphol several times, but quite a while ago & I've never hung around.
We'll stay there, the museum looks good. Then I'll leave DH with the bags & go shopping !
