But a book like this Rail map it will be your best friend. Really recommend going from London to Amsterdam, only 4 hours.
We stayed in North Amsterdam, which was much quieter and had loads of great places to eat. Plus you had to catch a ferry over, which added to the excitement. However we’re not ‘night time’ people so not fussed about not being near nightlife.
What time of year are you thinking? If summertime I’d recommend Locarno with children that age, lots to do, swimming in lake, lido etc.

Man in Seat 61 is the best website for any info on train journeys in Europe.

I think Amsterdam would be a great stop as others are suggesting. There are lots of other lovely cities in the Netherlands if you wanted to not do too many long journeys.

If you wanted to go further afield / further south you could do Paris then the sleeper train to Nice is fun, or you can do a sleeper route to Latour de Carol or Cerbere and then go on to Barcelona.

Check out Railbookers.co.uk for lots of itinerary ideas (obviously no need to book through them!). It helps you see the feasibility of distances. Some trips are much shorter than I would have thought eg Munich to Salzburg.

You can then use a site like raileurope or bahn.de to look at actual journey times, number of direct trains a day.

Not sure when you’re planning to go but the Amsterdam service may need to be suspended in 2024 (though last I heard they were hoping to find a solution).

If you can book a seat do! It's not always mandatory but well worth it.
