Having a huge panic about a passport issue. I’m not sure if I’m just being stupid but please help!
rules state ‘the passport issue date is less than 10 years before day of arrival in the EU. The passport expiry date is at least three months after intended day of departure from the EU.

passport issue date - 9th July 2014
passport expiry date - 9th April 2025

travel this Saturday

please tell me we aren’t getting stung by the 10 year rule?

You can't travel in the EU on that passport after 9th May 2024. Have a lovely holiday!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 07/09/2023 21:29

Your passport expires on 9th July 2024. You must leave the EU 3 months before that, so before 9th April 2024.

PuttingDownRoots · 07/09/2023 21:29

Your passport is valid until July 24... next year!

cherryassam · 07/09/2023 21:30

You are fine until 9th April 2024

LadyGAgain · 07/09/2023 21:30

Sorry 9th April 2024 or before would be your exit from an EU country to return home.

Rounee · 07/09/2023 21:30

You are fine

Muchtoomuchtodo · 07/09/2023 21:30

It’s fine! Have a great trip x

FettleOfKish · 07/09/2023 21:32

You're absolutely fine as above until April next year OP (source: I work in travel, specifically UK to Europe).

dementedpixie · 07/09/2023 21:39

passport issue date - 9th July 2014
For entry into the EU your passport expires on 9th July 2024

passport expiry date - 9th April 2025
You need to leave the EU by January 2025 to allow 3 months remaining

The 3 month rule is a separate from the 10 year rule so the 3 months doesn't have to be within the new 10 year expiry

Itsboundtohappen · 07/09/2023 21:46

You’re all amazing, thank you. I don’t know why I had a panic the moment I saw the extra months! Thanks all

Don't worry OP. In the course of my work last summer I had a full argument with a check in agent, in front of clients, that a passport issued in 2018 was fine to travel to Spain in 2023. He insisted that it wasn't because it had extra months on it.

Words were had with his manager Hmm

If it's tricky enough to confuddle airport staff, the average traveller can't be blamed for worrying.

This isn't quite correct. The extra months now simply do not count at all. A passport issued in July 2014 is valid until July 2024, and the required 3 months for Europe must be within that, so April 2024.

I assure you it is quite correct. The 3 month rule is a separate rule from the 10 year rule. The 10 years applies to entry into EU and the 3 month rule is for exiting the EU.

I thought this too but it's not the case. As @dementedpixie says the rules are separate to each other.

DHs passport expires in June 2024 but was issued on 5th November 2013. He just used it for travel last week, travelling to Spain and back.

FettleOfKish · 07/09/2023 22:11

@dementedpixie Apologies, I've had a glass of wine. But if entering the EU on holiday on 9 July 2024, the 90 day rule would mean she'd need to leave by 7 October 2024.

She wouldn't then be allowed to re-enter on the same passport as the 10 year since issue has passed.

cherryassam · 07/09/2023 22:15

PPs are right now that I reread -

Your passport needs to have an issue date in the last 10 years on entry to the EU. You are fine to enter the EU until the 8th July 2024.

Your passport needs to have a minimum of three months left before the expiry date on exit from the EU. You are fine to exit the EU until 9th April 2025.

I just meant that when exiting the EU you can go by the printed expiry as the 3 months remaining don't need to be within the new 10 year expiry given from adding 10 years to the issue date.

Issue date + 10 years for entry to EU
Printed expiry - 3 months for exiting the EU

I find this really helpful.
