I’m looking for a perfect destination for special birthday next year. I’d like a villa with own pool, no car required. Near to beach, shops bars, restaurants. Would consider Italy or south of france. Would love to be able to visit st Tropez but definitely out of my budget, so maybe somewhere nearby so I could do a day trip.

There’s no train station in St Tropez so you’ll need to consider how you’ll get there without a car. The closest stations are St Raphael and Les Arcs, both of which are around 40 km away. You can take a bus from both these towns. Antibes is lovely and has a station on the line between Nice and St Raphael.

What IS your budget and when are you hoping to go? How many people? A villa with pool near St Tropez will be ££££. Maybe have a look at Port Grimaud? You can get a boat from there. Or Gassin? The Kontiki site on Pampellonne Plage has chalets with their own small pools but you'd need a car I think. Or Corsica - somewhere near Porto Vecchio. Or northern Sardinia. Cala di Falco has villas but not their own pools - 10 mins walking distance to town/restaurants/beach.

£4000 max for villa, 5 people august. I’m now thinking that Italy will be easier.

You could look for villas in Ste Maxime. There is an excellent and regular ferry service between there and St Tropez. There are coaches from Nice airport to Ste Maxime. It's a lovely town too with lots of good restaurants.

We’ve had villas in ste Maxime Antibes and st tropez tbh all were £££££££
have you thought about the Algarve? It’s beautiful and you’d get a lot more for your dollar

£4000 in August won't get you much near St Tropez. Is this 1 week or 2?

1 week

Look at Bordighera which is just on the France/Italy border.
