Cheap ways to do a long summer stay in Scotland/France/Netherlands?

We've got an idea to spend the summer holidays next year in Scotland or another couple of options driving distance from SE UK. My husband would need to work remotely, I work in a school so would be off and we also have two KS2 aged children plus a dog.
The idea would be to spend a couple of weeks where we're all on holiday travelling around and then 'live' in one location for the other 4 weeks. Looking at airbnb, it is £££. We could do a house swap but have never done anything like that before, so a bit wary. A campervan could work for the holiday part, but DH isn't going to want to work in that for a month! Is there an option I'm missing? Anyone done this?
I know Scotland have different school holidays to England, so I'm not sure how this would affect anything also.

You could stay at someone’s house and look after their pet while they are away through Trusted Housesitters or similar?
