What to do before/ after DisneyWorld

I'm booking us a week at Disney World for next August. We've been before for a long trip, so don't feel we will need as long this time. I was thinking of combining it with a city break before or after. Has anyone done this?

I was thinking of either doing Washington, Texas or New York. Any suggestions? DC will be 9 when we go. Thank you :)

New York in August isn’t great, tbh. How about a beach and city trip in Miami? If you hire a car, you could be there in about 3.5 hours. Have you done the Kennedy Space Center?

Washington is amazing, but we went last august and it was very, very hot, almost too hot for sightseeing.

Plenty to do in florida that's not disney. The space or gulf coast would be lovely.

We did one week Disney - drove to Miami and did one week Caribbean cruise.

We went down to Long Beach for 2 nights, the next time we went we had a week in a rented house in Lemon Bay, near Sarasota.

A short cruise?

We did a fly drive Disney, Universal, Cocoa Beach, Kennedy Space Centre, Key Largo, Everglades Sanibel and Sarasota.

DC is a lovely city. If mid-late August, it’s not that busy, as Americans have gone back to school. Museums are great, nice places to eat, wide streets and feels spacious. Some of the free museums - Planet Word, Air & Space, Natural History - are perfect for a 9 year old. Flight quite short from Orlando, too.

I love NYC, but it’s quite hard going in August - hot, humid and a bit full on.

Miami? If you want city and beach, it’s pretty ideal and close to Orlando. Again, hotel prices plummet last week of August, although weather can be crazy. We have been at this time of year and had a couple of days of solid rain and hurricane warnings, although plenty of lovely, sunny days too.

Texas in August? Seriously!

Just do beach in Florida.

  1. The Smokey Mountains in Tennessee is a pleasant relaxing area after Disney World.
  2. The beaches and St Augustine would be my choice.
  3. Atlanta has an aquarium etc.
