INTERAIL in Europe with the kids - has anyone done this?

Thinking of spending a few weeks travelling around (some of) Europe this summer with DCs aged 8 and 6. DH can join us for a couple of weeks at most, and one week is to be spent with ILs in Loire Valley in s/c house they have booked in mid Aug. Am thinking we do a few long all day journeys and then little trips within a country/region maybe from a base to save on hotel booking admin. Am thinking - regretfully - that will have to plan and book in advance.

At present we are thinking maybe SW France, onto Spain, Rhone valley and Italy - maybe onto Greek islands (this may be too ambitious) probably staggered into 10 days either side of the fixed week in Aug.

I am looking for anyone else who has done this, any tips etc, and ideas of must-see places. Which Spanish cities would you visit with kids if you had to pick two, which seaside towns have a beach etc, esp any recommendations for cheap hotels/pensions or sites to search for them.

We like being near the sea and they can take a half day of culture if followed by icecream. We will be on a budget!

All suggestions, ideas and old threads that my inept searching failed to throw up v welcome!

We did this last summer with kids 2,5 and 8. We went to Paris for a few days, then Provence where we stayed with friends for a week and travelled a bit around in the region (went to Nice, Antibes and Monaco). Then went to Italy visited Tuscany,Venice, Pompei, Rome and then back over the French alps and Vienna, but by time we were getting really tired and caught a plane back to London. We were gone for 4 weeks!

Trains in Italy are great and really easy to travel with kids. We stayed on farms in Italy. Look up Italian farm holidays. Lots of nice wine

what a fantastic idea.

you could maybe try to combine sea/culture when possible; I am thinking of Barcelona/Sitges or Venice/Lido.

what do your DCs like? what do you like? it may be a bit hot to pound the pavements all the time, so mooching, going to parks and people watching from cafes might be more enticing.

Fairymum that sounds brilliant! The Italian farm idea sounds good - did you plan it all/pre-book or where you able to book stuff up a couple of days ahead as you went along? I hadn't thought about going up to Vienna but we have friends in Zurich so that might be a good stopping off on way home. Dusty I think you are right - towns/cities on the coast is where we are at - Barcelona really appeals as you can get to the coast by train, or things like Pompeii too.

Thanks - off to google italian farm sites now

We pre-booked most of it, but just used the tourist information centres in Paris and Vienna and stayed in youth hostels which was fine with kids. I actually recommend it as you meet so many people and its very sociable.
