Which one would you go to? Thinking 4 days, Christmas marker, exploring and general fun.

They're near enough to each other to visit one from the other. You'll probably find (oddly) that Vienna is marginally cheaper than Salzburg in terms of accommodation, food etc. Beautiful though it is, Salzburg is in danger of becoming an overpriced theme park and a bit of a parody if itself. (but similar to Venice in that respect)

I'd stay in Vienna and visit Salzburg.

My dc loved the Schönbrunn maze, zoo, Haus des Meeres and Prater in Vienna ,so I’d say stay in Vienna. Also, the Christmas markets in Vienna have loads for children to do such as cookie making and fairground rides.

Salzburg!!! Much nicer than Vienna in my opinion

"They're near enough to each other to visit one from the other."

Not really. They're over 300km apart. Vienna is between two and a half and three hours by train from Salzburg, so a 6-hour round trip - and either city requires more than a day to explore.

On a 4-day trip stick with one or the other - I'd choose Salzburg, with a day-trip to Zell am See or Wolfgangsee if you want a day out of the city.

Be aware that the Christmas Markets start on 23rd. November,

I suppose I was thinking in terms of the distance between Innsbruck and Vienna and Salzburg and Vienna. 😂 I'd still make my base not Salzburg tbh.

We stayed in Vienna and did a day trip to Salzburg which was lovely. I think we chose the right way round.

I took DD to Salzburg at the end of November when she was 5. We weren’t prepared for the cold and wet, coming from Italy where down jackets and Timberland shoes are used for skiing, not city breaks.

We still recall her holding both our hands and saying “I’m so cold I can’t walk ANY MORE!”. That was about 6 pm and we went straight back to the hotel, cancelling the rest of the day’s plans.
She loved the music museum and the museum of childhood in Salzburg. We also did a “Sound of Music” restaurant experience.

Salzburg in a heartbeat. We went in early December a few years ago and it was so so beautiful. I'd love to go back.

We visited both in March this year so can't advise on Xmas markets. We had better weather in Vienna but Salzburg was lovely even in the gloom and drizzle, infact we did something we'd never normally do on the one sunny day we had in Salzburg and went to the zoo, loved it. Both are very easy to get around and I'd happily go back to either.
