European Family Touring holiday

We are just starting to think about our summer holiday for next year and just keep going around in circles, so looking for suggestions and advice!

We have DS8 and DS6, enjoy outdoor activities (walking, kayaking, gorge scrambling, swimming, cycling). Past holidays have been train journey stopping at different cities through Europe and ending with a week at Key Camps in Italy and a flight home. And driving through France and Belgium, stopping and cycling along the way and ending up with a long weekend in Centre Parcs.

We were thinking of having a villa with our own pool, or on a resort with a lane swimming pool- also, the kids want a water park and I'd like some interesting places to visit as we'd get bored just staying put for 2 weeks. Not bothered about a beach. Happy to travel around via train/car a bit and end up somewhere. Or stay somewhere for a couple of weeks and travel to different places from there??

Has anyone else done anything similar to these types of holidays and has any recommendations?

Thanks!

We did a bit of a loop around The Netherlands. Took the ferry to Hook of Holland and stayed at Duinrell. From there we hired bikes and cycled to places like Madurodam, the beach and Butterflies at the Vliet. We then drove to Amsterdam and stayed just outside the city centre for 4 nights. From there we went to De Kleine Wolf for a few nights and after that we drove down to Beekse Bergen for a few more nights (with a day trip to Efteling).

We were thinking of the Netherlands actually, so that gives us food for thought - thanks for the tips!

Take a look at Lake Annecy - sounds like it would meet your needs and loads to do either at the lake or further afield in the Alps. Plenty of houses to rent around the area and also campsites with accommodation - can recommend La Ravoire.

Second Annecy. Loads to do and the buses are free in the summer to minimise traffic. We are looking at the Ardeche for next summer, with a stop in paris first for Olympics fun. So many good options!
