What to do in Majorca in the rain?

BlowDryRat · 25/08/2023 18:19

We're going to Majorca/Mallorca this weekend and the weather is set to be pouring with rain/thunderstorms for a couple of days. We're self-catering with an outdoor pool. None of us have ever been to Majorca before, so I'd like to make the most of it despite the weather.

Any ideas of rain-friendly things to do? It's me, DH and DC aged 13 and 10.

@Beaverbridge yes my DS was told today prob be 48 hours but then told them very high chance can fly out Monday so they are going back to airport tomorrow morning

@Longingforthesummer yes, we flew out on Saturday morning. We saw one car that had been hit by a falling tree in the carpark opposite the aquarium and our patio furniture was blown around, but otherwise it was just wet.

I'm sorry for everyone whose flights were cancelled. There were flights landing later in the afternoon when the weather cleared up, but there was torrential rain again in the evening. We were eating in a nearby town and the square flooded - had to run for it and were soaked in seconds. It's lovely today so I hope everyone manages to get here.

I'm not going til tomorrow, got my dates mixed up, so hopefully things will be ok then.
Hope everyone else gets there in one piece, weather looking ok for the week (I'll still be going to the aquarium!).

Several people have recommended the Caves of Drach. We stayed right by them in June. Book your tickets for a timed entry on line. The is another cave nearby called the Caves of Ham, which has a dinosaur park attached. Whilst you are over there, walk down the steps next to the Mallorcan Pearl shop, and in a minute you will be at Porto Cristo harbour. Good for a drink and lunch. When you have finished with the caves, go to Manacor, market day on Monday. Just outside the town is the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy. The museum has one floor of AI games which leads to a room full of his trophys plus loads of stuff from other sports people including a F1 car, if your children like sport they will love it. Finish off with drinks in the cafe overlooking the fantastic tennis training facilities. You can have a wander around and may even see Rafa training. The big black boat in the middle of Porto Christi harbour belongs to Rafa, as is the huge house being built in the headland to the left of the harbour entrance.

Ah what a shame for people's holidays.
We once went to Majorca in October and had a full week of rain. Luckily no DC then so we just mooched about indoors.
I'm going next week to Calla Millor.

⭐️UPDATE
DS went back to the airport this morning 5am for the 7am flight, delayed until 10am, finally left 11am. Arrived. Weather looks ok...he is there until Friday so hoping they get a few good days of sun.

Heavy rain and caves full of water are not always a good combo…

NinaGM · 29/08/2023 12:07

Flights delayed, storms and air traffic outage. Flights also cancelled.

Weather is also poor, wet, stormy and not what we'd hoped for. Spain in the rain is quite limited!

These caves are full of stalactites so not prone to flooding, thankfully! We've just come out - very beautiful. It's spotting a bit but not too badly so we're off snorkeling.

@NinaGM we'd hoped to just flop around the pool and on the beach, so it's not quite what we'd hoped for either. I'm grateful that the temperature is mid-20's rather than in the 30's though, so swings and roundabouts. We even got to the beach for a couple of hours on Sunday, inbetween thunderstorms. I hope you're managing to have fun too!

Nice - I'll use that. Taking your advice, we'll try to go when the sun is shining.

BlowDryRat · 29/08/2023 17:28

@LarkspurLane I noticed that if you book online for 2pm or later you can get a 15% discount, so that might be better if it works with your plans.

I'm happy to chill out and read my book but it feels like a waste to come all this way to do something I could be doing at home. Sun, sea and sand isn't a usual experience for us.

We landed in Majorca yesterday lunchtime and consider ourselves so lucky that we avoided the flight chaos yesterday…feeling so sorry for everyone whose holidays have been ruined!

We were sat in the caves, waiting for the boat with musicians to start in June. Everyone was quiet with anticipation. As the boat came into view, a small boy in the row behind started to sing 'Row, Row, Row the boat. Gently down the stream... The whole song. That broke the ice.

BlowDryRat · 30/08/2023 10:53

We didn't get treated to that, but there were several muppets taking photos and dropping their phones to spoil the ambience.
