Anyone know DUBAI well?

I need to know whether it is feasible to fly into Abu Dhabi and then take a cab to Jumeirah Beach. I've heard that there is less traffic this way than from Dubai airport to Jumeirah.

how long would the journey take and how much might it cost in a cab?

dizzydixies · 29/02/2008 23:04

mner on or ante natal thread just been - think she's called Sarah - due Aug 0 - you could crash that

if nobody else knows I can find out tomorrow as have faily who live there

don't know offhand though - sorry

SaveScrabulous · 29/02/2008 23:06

Thanks dizzy - would be great if you could find out.

dh thinks it's better for some reason to fly to AD rather than Dubai if going to Jumeirah beach - think someone at work told him this but I'm not sure how reliable a tip it is!

SaveScrabulous · 29/02/2008 23:21

my mum's cousins live and work out there, my great uncle goes out several times a year, he's 8 the brilliant old sod and my aunt went with him once last year, am down staying with her this wkend but she's out just now so can't ask her sorry

am very close with mum's cousins kids who are in london but spend all their spare time out there so will ask them

from what I can gather you'll either love it or hate it but won't find out till you actually get there - shopping heaven too apparenrtly

PussinJimmyChoos · 29/02/2008 23:25

There is a lot of building going on but tbh, didn't ruin our holiday as all the areas we visited didn't have buildings going up - the souks, the shopping malls (divine and open until 11pm btw!!). We went about 3/4 years ago though so the building may have got more intense now with the building of that 'palm' and 'the world' thingy....

SaveScrabulous · 29/02/2008 23:38

oh gosh yes the palm and the world - I just can't see how they're ever going to sell all those new properties!

I am really looking forward to sun, relaxation and sport out there but to be honest am not a big shopper on holiday (and crucially nor are ds and dh) so I doubt we'll hit the malls much! Probably best not to given the holiday will cost an arm and a leg already!

When are you going? Make sure you don't go in Ramadan - a lot of places shut down during the fasting hours which wouldn't make the holiday so great for you. Ramadan this year is around Oct-Nov I think, but google to check

SaveScrabulous · 01/03/2008 08:33

No worries there -all a last minute thing so going this month!

Jumeira Beach is in Dubai, somewhere in-between AD & Dubai, I expect it would be less traffic from AD than Dubai, that can get a bit congested. Taxis are quite cheap, but I expect distance might be further? Not been to AD, just to Dubai.

We flew into Dubai at Christmas and had a limo up to Abu Dhabi ( Silverjet) and back again. It took about 90 mins and cost 300 dirhams each way.

It depends on the time of day, we landed at 07.30 return flight was 10.30 so not a lot of traffic. If it is late afternoon, 4ish the Sheikh Zayed road is chocabloc. lots of road works.

We are going again in August, but flying to Dubai as with Silverjet the check in is 45 minutes and when you land your luggage is in the car, kerbside and passports back within 15 minutes!

baffledmum · 03/03/2008 13:30

We stayed at the Hilton Jumeirah Beach 2 years ago and the building work was fascinating and unobtrusive.

One year ago we stayed at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel and you couldn't see the building work from there at all.

We flew into Dubai each time and had a private transfer booked through Trailfinders at £65 return, in an air conditioned Audi with child seats, cold towels and water. The driver met us airside and whisked us through passport control, picking up our bags for us on the way. Worth every penny and highly recommended.

orangina · 03/03/2008 13:35

I think it is about an hour and half from AD to Jumeirah, but as alibubbles says, the rush hour traffic can be hell. I would say it is NOT quicker than going from Dubai airport, but I haven't been there for a few years now, so might be out of date.....

SaveScrabulous · 03/03/2008 14:22

ooh that transfer service sounds good - was it linked to a flight booking (I've already organised that and not through trailfinders)

Have now booked flights to Dubai not AD as seems simpler.
