Who's been to Billund (Legoland)?

StillWantingADog · 21/08/2023 16:42

Hello
so am off next week with two DS aged 10 and 8. Very excited, wanted to go since I was their age, never made it. Trying to work out what to do each day and book tickets so as to save a bit of money and hopefully avoid issues/queueing. Time is tight with not quite three full days

General plan is
Day 0 travel - getting in quite late (c 10pm)
Day 1 Lego House. We may not manage a super early start but it is almost opposite our hotel which should be easy peasy.
Day 2 Legoland - we will be there when the gates open
Day 3 Aquadome at Lalandia plus milling around in Billund a bit (?) and early dinner before heading back to airport, flight at 9.30pm.

Thoughts on the above? Main issue is is Lalandia enough to amuse for at least most of the afternoon? Or should I consider getting a 2 day pass for legoland and spending at least a bit of time there on day 3. Can't get a feel for how big lalandia is but it's bloody expensive so hopefully worth the money (my sons LOVE waterparks so will be happy even if I'm bored). Also not sure if legoland is worthy of more than one full day. Am hopeful that there will not be too bad queues as the Danish kids have gone back to school etc so hopefully we can cover it in one day.

No possibility of adding a fourth day unfortunately but would consider going back if we enjoy it, probably combining with Copenhagen next time

Advice welcome, I'm already exhausted thinking about it.

Because I found a very useful thread from last year - can't wait now! And will look into the mini chef as that sounds ace. And find the bakery!

looking at the mini chef, this looks ace. However do you have to be in the lego house to go? wondering if it could be a goer for an early dinner on the day we fly back despite us not being at the lego house that day.

We’re going next week too and staying at Lalandia. Also not been before, so in the same boat as you, but I found this which gives you a 2-4-1 discount code for Legoland.

Oh that is so helpful thank you!!!

Have you decided how you're going to split your days? Exciting times!

I’ve been!!

lalandia is big. The water park will be perfect for your age boys. There’s also bowling etc. like a big centre parcs. The pool is bigger than centre parcs. Outside the main centre all around the houses there are small playgrounds. The houses are amazing. Best I’ve ever stayed in. I can’t remember when we went (specific part of school hols), but there were no queues in Legoland. I think 1 day will be enough.

the airport is also lovely!

Bananaspliff · 21/08/2023 17:29

We have five full days there so we were thinking 1 day at Legoland, 1 day at Lego House and 3 days on site at Lalandia, we have gold wristbands so we have unlimited use of all the facilities. My children are 8 and 4 and will be quite happy spending full days on the water slides.

Sounds amazing. Will listen out for other British voices at the pool in lalandia

last year’s thread suggests the nakedness in the changing room is a bit of a shock! It was like that when I went to Iceland, years ago, so presumably a scandi thing!

I have just come back. We stayed at Lalandia. The aquadome is very busy and I wouldn't pay for it if it's not included. The shuttle has stopped now but you can see if you can get to https://en.wowpark.dk/wow-park-billund instead? My kids spent all day there and wouldn't leave. They lasts only a couple of hours in a waterpark at most. So your experience might be very different.

We stayed there for 8 days but hired a car. We got a two day pass for Legoland but you can do it in one day. We spent a day at Lego house, a day at wow park and then another day at Givskud Zoo. The other days we went to the Aquadome for a couple of hours and general sight seeing in Jutland. We didn't pay for the golden band.

Oh yes the nakedness. Beware that the changing room is single sex communal and kids over the age of 6 needs to go to the one according to their sex. It'll be a problem if you are a single parent with kids of the opposite sex. They are very very naked in the changing rooms. They take off all their clothes before looking for stuff in their lockers and walking to the showers. DH said the same for the men changing rooms.

windz · 21/08/2023 18:39

Spent 2 days in Billund in early June. Arrived in super early, so after we'd had breakfast we spent the day at Lego House. My children are same ages as yours, although are growing out of Lego in the last year or so. They had a ball at Lego house. It's all so interactive. Book a slot for lunch at the restaurant when you start your day, we unfortunately missed this.
Then we spent the following day at Legoland. It wasn't particularly busy, max we queued was 10mins or so and that was only for a couple of the rides. We were able to get off and join the queue and straight back on for a few things. The only disappointing area was Lego Ninjago. Loved the Lego movie ride, it's inside a big building so don't miss it.
Billund is flat and very easy to get from A to B walking. Enjoy

Blimey. This could be problematic then as dh is not coming! I shall have to prepare ds1 somehow.
are you “allowed” to walk around in your swimwear or with a towel? I’m ok with others being naked but not quite up for being naked myself

BringOnSummerHolidays · 21/08/2023 19:36

DDs and I showered with our swim suits on. We were the only one. You don’t have to get naked if you don’t want to. Both DDs commented on how weird it was!

BringOnSummerHolidays · 21/08/2023 19:37

Not weird because we have our swimsuits, but how they are all walking around completely naked!

2anddone · 21/08/2023 19:51

Hi @StillWantingADog we were there last year at roughly the same time you are going.

Our days were arrival in morning so day in lalandia (where we stayed)
Day in legoland
Day in Lego house (and it was a whole day!!
Final day in legoland with flight home in evening

Legoland was very quiet and we could easily have done it in a day (far more rollercoasters there than Windsor which was great but short queues)

Lego house was also amazing, you could go to the Lego chef restaurant without paying for admission to Lego house as it's inside the entrance before you scan a ticket. Be warned service is slow so if you go on your last day leave plenty of time.

The water park at lalandia was really good (if you can see past the nakedness!) and we easily spent a good half day there....be prepared for lots of carrying rings up stairs for the slides.

There are other things to look at in lalandia which can be paid separately for there is a soft play and bowling as well as a ski slope you can easily fill a day, there is also an outdoor playground and a land train around the site (which is free).

Have an amazing time we loved it and will definitely revisit again ds (17) wrote to Lego house when he got home asking about summer placements but they no longer accept people who aren't fluent in danish so he is currently on duolingo between studying a levels!!

newstart1234 · 21/08/2023 20:01

There are almost never queues at Legoland in Billund so you should be fine there - one day is fine for us.. Lalandia is easily a full day for us. Wow park in Billund is good for outdoorsy and active type kids. Copenhagen is of course fine but a long drive away. Kids that age might prefer a the Viking museum in Bork Havn which is a hour west of Billund and free entry for children I believe.

Thanks so much sounds like you had a similar itinerary to us. And fitted everything in. Wow park looks good but will need to wait till next time …..

best of luck to your ds. I am also doing Danish Duolingo but finding it tough going, and I’m a languages grad!

My Mum lives in Vejle, so we fly in to Billund when we visit.
We went to Lego House in February, and it was definitely a full day's visit. It was amazing! I didn't know about the restaurant before we got there, so they went full - definitely book for that!
Legoland is definitely also a full day. DS (7y) loved it! (So did I - I haven't been since I was a child).
Lalandia sounds like it should be on a list for a future visit.
Have fun! I bet you will love it!

2anddone · 21/08/2023 20:58

@StillWantingADog he is definitely struggling to fit it in alongside A-level coursework etc but is focussed and really wants to try to go next summer before uni starts!
He is Lego mad, that's why we went last year as a treat for doing so well in his GCSEs. We have been to Disneyland Paris and Disneyworld and our trip to Billund was enjoyed just as much as those holidays.
Have a lovely time

Fudgeandcaramel · 21/08/2023 20:59

Just back.
Lego House is amazing. Spend a whole day there. Book mini chef restaurant asap as gets booked up and is really worth it. Super fun and the food is great.

Book tickets before you go. You can get a ticket bundle for legoland and Lego house together which is cheaper.

legoland was good fun but I couldn’t have done two days there. There were some queues up to around 40 min for popular rides. If your kids want to do the Lego drivers licence go there and book your slot as soon as you get in.

I must confess that I am a huge waterpark fan and fine with nakedness but really didn’t like Lalandia waterpark. Small, smelly and very overcrowded.

User123456123456 · 21/08/2023 21:00

Name change cos we’ve just got back and don’t want anyone spotting me!

We had the most amazing time - my dc are about the same age as yours and it was perfect.

So we flew in very early in the morning and went straight to Legoland. We could have done enough in 1 day but I was glad we had a second day planned as it meant we could take a very relaxed approach to it all and just say ‘we’ll do that one when we come back’. I think we slightly miscalculated as it was fairly busy because I think the Danish schools were still off. Still, the longest we waited for anything was 25 mins so not a patch on the queues at Windsor.

We stayed at the Legoland village and that was great - super convenient. Though my dc were eyeing up the Lalandia pool (it’s right next door) enviously. However, we wouldn’t have really had much time for swimming anyway so it didn’t feel like too much of a loss - but they want to go back and stay there next time!

The next day we did Lego house. Do try to book for opening if you can (10am) as it only gets busier through the day and we managed to do things like the robot & animation sessions early before they had queues. It is amazing though - so much to do and brilliantly organised. We had lunch at mini chef and it was a real highlight - I’d read a few so-so reviews online but we were very happy with the food & whole experience. You can book online in advance and it gets booked up so do this before you go. There are lockers on the ground floor of Lego house where you can leave your bags for free - linked to your wristbands.

We then went back to Legoland on our final day. My kids love a theme park & are real adrenaline junkies so we all enjoyed being able to visit the park again & get lots of goes on our favourite rides (be warned polar explorer is a big rollercoaster. Great but more than I was expecting the first time round!).

Buses 143 and 43 go to billund from the airport. You can download the bus company app to buy tickets (cash only on the bus) - tickets are valid for 1hr.

Food & eating out is expensive. Eg the buffet at Legoland was around £30 per adult, it was about £10 for a plain hotdog and drink. However the food was fresh, nice salads etc and lots of choice.

There’s a great pedestrianised path through a sculpture park between centre of billund and Legoland. It’s all very easy to navigate.

Enjoy! We had such a great time, really one of the best /easiest breaks of this type we’ve had.

LucifersPain · 21/08/2023 21:03

Be warned, when we went (pre-covid) there were signs insisting everyone had to shower naked - communal area - before going into the pool. We did have a nice afternoon there - loved the water ride that went outside - must have gone down it over 30 times. The water ride with the rubber rings was good too.

We spent two whole days in Lego house and also two days in Legoland. Great memories of me and the littler one having a water fight with the germans while it was raining. Our other days were spent going to places like Aarhus, Roskilde etc. via bus.

The rides in Legoland are much more age appropriate than Windsor (which is a bit babyish imho).

Worst thing was the food in the LegoHouse Mini Chef restaurant - the chicken was uncooked and inedible. Hope they’ve sorted that now.

MumOfBoys1980 · 21/08/2023 21:07

We went for a long weekend in July - was amazing! My son who is Lego mad said he enjoyed the holiday as much as our holiday to Florida last year (& he loves roller coasters). My other child who isn’t as Lego crazy also loved it though.

We stayed at Lalandia & walked everywhere (apart from cab to & from airport). Definitely book mini chef if you can - it was so much fun. Lego house & Lego land were both great.

We loved the water park too - but yes agree about the changing rooms!

Havanananana · 21/08/2023 21:51

I would also second the WOW Pak as an activity that's a must-do in Billund.

It is a huge adventure playground - very rustic - with ropeways, huge slides, Tarzan-swings, tunnels, climbing nets, goats ... all very chilled and interactive and the complete opposite to the usual theme park experience. If you have kids who like climbing, crawling, challenging themselves and who don't mind getting dirty knees and hands, then WOW Park is great. According to the two boys from the Danish side of my family who insisted that I took there (aged 7 and 9) it is better than Legoland - in fact, this year they chose season tickets for WOW Park in preference to Legoland.

Take a picnic, sandwiches or food to cook - there are BBQ areas and picnic areas and you are encouraged to take your own food, although there is also a cafe on site.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/08/2023 08:58

I think you could fill a day in Lalandia if you like water parks. Plus there's other activities in there.

Of course you're 'allowed' to walk around the changing rooms in swimwear, but the point is that you must have a proper naked shower, the changing rooms are communal and the Danes don't have hang ups about naked bodies like a lot of British people. So everyone is naked.

When I went (I used to go to Denmark for work and often had half a day to kill waiting for flights, so went to the water park a couple of times because, why not?) I had trouble with my locker and one of the women just started helping me and we were both there completely starkers trying to make my locker work.

They seem to be a lot more relaxed about children and strangers too, so while you're probably now worrying about sending your DS alone into the mens (I don't know if they have family changing rooms) that is completely normal to them. A woman wanted her 6 ish YO DD to go on the slides with me because she wanted to deal with her younger child. It was all very confusing, she was telling her DD to 'go with that lady' and pointing at me, who clearly didn't understand but once I worked out what was happened I said 'sorry I'm English' (this is quite a useful thing to say in a country where the language is unintelligible to most foreigners and most locals over about 10 will speak better English than the Danish that most foreigners, especially Brits will ever manage) she asked me if her DD could come on the slide with me as she was tired from running up the steps and wanted to change her baby.

There's also a nice spa area in the waterpark complex, so if your DC are old enough to swim independently, that's something else you can do.

There's also a big play area with Lego at the airport, and a Lego shop, so allow time for that.

StillWantingADog · 22/08/2023 10:09

Thanks so much @BarbaraofSeville

um you must have a proper naked shower
am a bit worried about this, am totally not doing it in public, though the kids will be ok I think as long as I explain to them. Can I get away with keeping my cossie on do you think? Or will I get told off.
I also had hang ups about this in Japan, but got away with it because I was so obviously gaijin (foreigner).
