I'd really appreciate some advice / tips from you wise Mumsnetters. I'm a very anxious traveller and as a result haven't been abroad for a VERY long time. I'm hoping to travel start travelling again next year and thought camping in France would my partner and 12 year old son would be a good gentle start. Ideally I'm looking for the following:
Somewhere that's relatively easy to travel to by ferry
A site that has activities for a 12 year old such as a water park
Somewhere near the beach
Somewhere where we can experience the local culture / history
Does such a place exist? Would really appreciate your suggestions with a rough estimate of cost per week in the summer hols if possible! Grin

I understand your feeling about being anxious. That's normal when you go abroad or go to an unfamiliar place. I think getting a local guide is an advantage for you so you feel secure about not getting lost or with your transportation. The local guide will also help you with your itinerary.

Generally, camping can be more budget-friendly compared to traditional accommodations. On average, you might be looking at a rough estimate of £400 - £1000 per week for a family of three during the summer holidays. This includes campsite fees, food, and some entertainment expenses.

I would look at The Netherlands ( if you are not so bothered about hot weather).
Very accessible, search on here for threads with ‘holiday park’ recommendations.
Nearly everyone speaks perfect English too which can make life much easier.

Duinrell. Just fab! We flew, but you can go by ferry instead. It has a theme park and waterpark on site.
It's about half an hour from Amsterdam.
