Feeling so sad after holiday, anyone else get this?

We've just got back from the most wonderful holiday. Had an amazing time, fallen in love with the place. My dc made some lovely friends and has the time of their lives.

Even though we always have great holidays I'm usually a homebody and glad to get home to my own bed. But this holiday just seemed extra magical.

I keep welling up (pathetic I know). Anyone else get like this? Really need to snap out of it.

Having a little long weekend in the UK next week so hoping that will shake the feeling. Feel as though I'm cheating on our wonderful hotel 🤣

I know the feeling. Where did you go?

magicalkitty · 20/08/2023 14:29

Usually I can't wait to get home by the end of it, but I understand what you are saying. Holidays are a break from everyday life and there is the potential to feel a bit blue when you are back to reality.

I'm sure you will get over that feeling in a week or so though, once back to the normal routine.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 20/08/2023 14:34

Most people deal with this by booking a holiday for the following year (or sooner if they can afford it) - I think it's what holiday companies rely on.

rocksstones2023 · 20/08/2023 15:13

Post holiday blues. Fairly standard!

10 mins of work and it will feel like you've not been away, if it helps. 😂

WomanAtWork · 20/08/2023 15:21

Me! I get this a lot. It’s early-onset nostalgia. I get it when the kids are in plays at school, when I sell a beloved car, even when my baby apple tree bore its first feuit this year.

I was holiday hunting the day after we got back this year. Can’t WAIT for our next adventure!

TheYadaYada · 20/08/2023 15:22

I go through a weird ‘excited to go home’ thing and then feel so happy to see our house and wander all around the garden and see the changes. This year, it had rained so much when we were away, everything had gone mad. But then, a day later, I long to be on holiday again.

Then a week later, I’ve completely forgotten we ever went away.

EmmaPaella · 20/08/2023 15:23

I had a crap holiday and would love to swap post-holiday blues with you 😂

cocksstrideintheevening · 20/08/2023 16:06

Yep me. Got back yesterday, back to work tomorrow. Particularly sad as I think it will be the last year that Dts will want to actively hang out with us, unless until they come out the other side of teenage grunting.

We did have an amazing holiday though.

Likeaburstcouch · 20/08/2023 17:10

Totally. Worsened this year by our 3yo saying 'can we go back now?' as soon as we'd walked through the door at home, as he hadn't realised it was over 😭 he cried so much. At least the money was well spent.

Funkyslippers · 20/08/2023 18:51

Yes I've had this but my advice is don't jump the gun and book another holiday yet. Just let the feelings come & go. It will pass & you'll be left with the lovely memories. I don't think you always need something like a holiday to look forward to. Just do something nice for yourself every day, even if it's just a nice cup of tea in peace & quiet

PrimeBottleIcePopFlavour · 20/08/2023 19:20

Flew back yesterday and actually felt relief to be home for some strange reason. I was having huge reactions to the insect bites.

Where did you go?

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 20/08/2023 19:27

I hear you, OP. Had a fabulous holiday, relaxed, DD15 was happy, ate and drank and shopped. Crashed back to earth once home - I'm usually desperate to get home but just wanted to stay. And I'm back to work tomorrow (primary school) which makes it even worse.

I will confess to pricing holidays in the airport before we left for home........

HappiDaze · 20/08/2023 19:28

We had a great beach holiday and I miss the sun, swimming in the warm sea or pool. I miss it all and have been looking at where to go next year already

Comedycook · 20/08/2023 19:30

I feel the same op. I haven't been on holiday abroad for years...so long I actually kept having recurring dreams about being on a foreign beach. Anyway, we did manage to get away to Spain this year....I could have cried when we landed back in the UK. Holiday was so wonderful... normal life felt so incredibly crap in comparison. I was in a raining retail park thinking this time two days ago I was swimming in the Mediterranean sea

Doyouthinktheyknow · 20/08/2023 19:35

I definitely get the post holiday blues. We have only been for a week at a time the last few years and I don’t think it’s quite long enough, 2 weeks and I am ready for home!

We have had a week in the UK this summer and have a cruise to look forward to very soon which is nice. Am also planning a couple of weekend breaks to get me through the autumn and winter.

I definitely think having something to look forward to helps and we are very fortunate that we can afford it. I mostly hate my job but it does pay well and I cope by planning regular breaks.

ssd · 20/08/2023 19:38

We haven't had a holiday in 5 years. I'm really missing it. Where did 3 go op, it sounds absolutely lovely.

Newname2308 · 20/08/2023 19:43

Totally get it. In previous years I’ve booked the next year’s holiday soon after getting back, and that turned the sad feeling into a lovely anticipation.
I can’t currently book for next year, so I’ve started doing some major research into destinations, creating Pinterest boards and following Instagram accounts etc. So I recommend doing one of these approaches!

inloveandmarried · 20/08/2023 20:01

I had this this summer. It's the first time it's ever happened.

Both me and my husband both feel a bit bereft. We so enjoyed the holiday. Every single minute was special.

whiffyhouse · 20/08/2023 20:46

Yep. Landed early hours and just tested positive for covid - brilliant
(Don't flame me for testing. My mum is vulnerable so didn't want to see her whole feeling unwell)
Kids rated holiday 9/10 so job done there but I'm exhausted and feel like shit. All the sun was in vain

trulyunruly01 · 20/08/2023 21:06

I always convince myself it would be brilliant to move there, I'm on right move as soon as I get indoors. After a few days actual life takes over again.

mrploppypenguin · 20/08/2023 22:04

Oh definitely me. We got back on Thursday and DH and I spent last night discussing next summer's holiday plus possibilities for Oct and Easter school hols Grin

I'm still in the "this time last week we were (insert something nice and relaxing).." stage.

I really want to win the lottery.

Oh dear! Where were you?

Sallyingon · 20/08/2023 22:26

Yeah back on Thursday, went to work Friday which was actually quite good as it won't be such a shock tomorrow, but I can't think about anything else..keep looking at the photos and talking about the food and thinking about the warm sea. Been holiday hunting all day, definitely going to book a may break on payday!

lovescats3 · 21/08/2023 08:51

Yes I get this, was so nice for all of the family to be together

Exactly this.

I do get post holiday blues and don’t miss home or London when away; but if I am busy at work it gets forgotten quickly
