South of France - Cassis

I’d love to visit the Calanques region of France and Cassis would seem a good location to stay. Thinking maybe of going by train to Marseille and travelling on from there. Has anyone done anything similar and any recommendations for hotels and other places to visit. Two adults, no kids. TIA!

Bumping for you as this area is on my bucket list too!

We stayed in Marseille pre-covid but went to Cassis for a day trip and agreed that we should have stayed there instead! It's a gorgeous town, you can swim in a partially enclosed area from a beach right in the centre and there are lovely, relatively easy walks along the calanques there too.

I know this area and is lovely. Cassis is quite small though so I would not be sure if I would like to be there for more than a few days but depends on what you like. Can also be very busy in high summer but same true for all the resorts along the coast there. If you don’t have a car then options maybe more limited, but can get to marseille and La ciotat.
Trains seem good for this as well, and can get to bandol, Toulon and other towns on route. So you have some options. La ciotat is bigger, but not as charming ( has its own charm and I like it). Access to the calanques has been limited and you may have to reserve. I can dig out this information if you need.
I know Bandol really well more so than Cassis and you can access some of the calanques from there. Can’t help with hotels or restaurants at the moment sorry haven’t been there this summer, but some lovely ones,

i wil look at restaurants/hotels later to see prick my memory and see which ones I liked.

Thank you, very helpful! We plan to travel for a relatively short trip in early October when it should be less busy and a bit cooler.
