Carcassonne with toddler

Hi all,

We're thinking of a short (3/4 night) break to Carcassonne with our 18 month old.

Any recommendations of things to do or places to eat?

Also, the taxi ride would be 8 minutes away from the airport - the car seat we have can't really be taken. We wouldn't be doing any more driving while there - I guess my suggestion is, would they be okay with DS on our laps?

I had a quick look if there were any buses etc. but couldn't seem to find any - as I'm aware that's safer.

Thank you!

We went with young dc but we took our car, and don’t know how we would have managed without it because some of the places we took the dc were a little out of the city. We spent two days exploring the city, and then went to Cabrespine cave which was amazing. We also went to Carcassonne Plage and an Australian farm where we were given a bread basket to feed the animals.
We went in the summer and there were daily jousting tournament which engaged the Dc for a while. There were also several street artists.

Can you email the taxi firm in advance to see if they can provide a car seat? I wouldn't risk taking my child in the car without one.

@Fivemoreminutes1 - we're only going for 3 nights, so our 2 full days will just be exploring Carcassonne itself. When DS is a little bit older, we'll go back to France either with our car or hiring a car - the places you went to are beautiful.

@SpringSummerDreamer - thank you, as a ftm and having not been abroad yet and had to navigate this, I hadn't even tho

@SpringSummerDreamer Woops!
*thought about asking if they had some we could use, a quick google and I think all will be well! It's less than 4km, so hoping the car seats they provide will be good enough for us 😊

I love Carcassonne and went for the second time this summer but it is not particularly toddler friendly. It's very hilly and cobbled. And the streets are cramped and busy. We took our 8 year old who is very interested in castles and that sort of thing and it was a great age. We'd avoided taking her when she was younger (we are in the area every summer as family have a house nearby).

We went with a 2 year old a few years back (pre Covid). There was a shuttle bus from the airport so you might be able to get on that if it’s still going. At that age you just potter about don’t you, they’re excited by having a look at anything. The market in the new town is amazing if you decide to venture out of the old town. There’s a few squares with restaurants in the old town, any of those are fine with a baby it’s busy and noisy anyway.

Apart from the castle, there is very little else to do there. I was really disappointed by it. Wish i'd bailed and gone to Toulouse!

The air port buses connected with the flights if I recall correctly. The airport is tiny. The view from the place as you come in is amazing though.

Book a hotel a5 the top by the castle. Its a steep walk up if you're at the bottom
Carcassonne is lovely. Telhe castel is good they have pony rides jousting etc little tourist train
