Over weight suitcases - what are the fines?

I'm flying Virgin Atlantic this week. Does anyone know how much they charge nowadays for an overweight suitcase? Is it by the kg? I'm asking as I have to take stuff for my mother, and I'm wondering if to fork out £85 for an additional suitcase, or risk a fine for a heavy one which could potentially work out cheaper.

I think it’s £65, but it might change depending on route / which airport you’re departing.

I think it’s just a one off £65, I’m not sure if there’s an upper limit.

Depends some routes don’t allow excess at all. You’ll have to check your tickets for the baggage rules

OK, sounds like I might as well pay for the extra bag then.....

There’s usually a maximum bag weight and they won’t take the case over that as it’s dangerous for the baggage handlers. If the items are suitable it’s usually cheaper to send through the post
