Was this woman rude on the plane?

Last month I took a plane trip abroad and can't get out of my head about the woman who sat next to me.

She had an aisle seat and me in the middle. Straight away she sat with her arms and most importantly her elbows across the arm rest so for most of the flight it was poking my rib cage.

But what got me even more was her left foot was in my foot space area in front of me, so the other side of the metal barrier and not in her own zone. So when the flight is due to take off, I had issues pushing my bag into the space in front and even heard her tut and shove my bag over with her foot to give her foot in my space more room. It also meant I had no where to put my own feet!

I just found this extremely rude and I am normally outspoken, but could not think how to phrase get your foot in your own space politely. In the end it was a short flight so just sucked it up.

It's made me wonder had anyone else experienced weirdness on a flight from others?

You should have given her a big smile and said "would you mind moving your foot please as I have no space".

People like that don't know what to do with polite directness.

Lizzy1980 · 13/08/2023 22:28

She was definitely being rude by encroaching on your space like that but she may not even have realised she was doing it. It never ceases to amaze me just how little self awareness some people have

BasiliskStare · 13/08/2023 22:32

I agree with @Finlesswonder , a polite smile & could you move your foot to your seat , I can't stash my bag or put my own feet in my space. Thank you ever so much.

AuntieDolly · 13/08/2023 22:37

Not much point worrying about it now. Beyond repair, beyond care

PrimeBottleIcePopFlavour · 13/08/2023 22:44

That's true, I've flown over 100 times, but this one was like what the heck!

Re the arms overspill into your seat space, is this code word for the woman was obese?

PrimeBottleIcePopFlavour · 14/08/2023 05:12

No she was not on larger size.

Yup, flying long haul to the UK recently. Woman sitting in front of me put her used tray of food, full of half eaten curry, etc. into my foot space. I didn't see her do it, so only realised sometime afterwards it was there when I reached for my bag.

We were only a few rows back from the galley and in aisle seats, so she could easily have just taken it to the flight crew.

I got up and took it myself, she watched me do it, I smiled at her when I walked back to my seat and she just glared at me. I should have dropped it in her lap, but I wasn't in the mood for aggro.

Mate

move on

I read this as 'was this woman nude on the plane. Was intrigued!
Clearly need to put the varifocals on

Yes she was rude.

TeenLifeMum · 14/08/2023 05:41

Omg, just use your words “excuse me, please can you move your foot over to your space? Thank you so much.” And “Oooh your elbow is in my ribs, please can you move a little? Thank you”
It doesn’t need to be aggressive. Some people are a bit oblivious and often nervous flyers are the worst. I doubt she got on the plane gleefully plotting how to piss you off.

Kweeky · 14/08/2023 06:07

I suspect she’d have an excuse for putting her foot there - arthritic knee? Pole dancer (always keeps legs apart)?

Doesanyoneknowwhattheyaredoing · 14/08/2023 06:11

She probably thought she needed to make sure she got the arm rests. I have been in the middle seat before and had the people either side take the arm sets which left me squashed with nowhere to put my arms.

AbsolutelyCreamCrackered · 14/08/2023 06:29

Yes, she was rude.

You need to be a bit more assertive with people like that otherwise they just go through life encroaching on everyones space.

Personally I would have lost it, but a "excuse me, but can you move your arm, as this is my seat and my space, and you are over it. Thanks", head tilt and smile.

PrimeBottleIcePopFlavour · 14/08/2023 22:29

Kweeky I did wonder if there was maybe something going on and she couldn't keep her legs together?

She sounds very rude esp re the arm rest and pushing your bag, tutting.

Only thing I’d say is that that metal bit doesn’t delineate where the aisle sitter’s foot space ends and where the middle sitter’s space begins - the metal “barrier” is just holding the seat in front up, and it’s well within the aisle sitter’s space. So she could have put a foot on the “inside” of that metal bit and still been in her own space - but only just.

Fallingthroughclouds · 15/08/2023 08:25

Much bigger things to worry about, yes she was a bit rude. No point making a thread about it though. Move on.
