Inspiration for late September

Looking for inspiration for somewhere in Europe for late summer sun, for me and my husband at the end of September, after ds heads to uni, for a much needed break. Somewhere where we can walk to nice restaurants for dinner, things around to see and do and opportunity to chill at the beach/pool. Happy to hire car to get around. No all inclusive hotels. I like nice food and a bit of culture thrown in.

A greek island
The Canaries
Cyprus

Check direct flights at your closest airport to narrow down the choices.

We went to the Greek Islands in late September - we had a lovely holiday! But don't go anywhere too remote - I'd checked that there were tavernas/restaurants in the village in Mykonos where we stayed.... only to find they were all closed the last week in Sept as the season had ended!

Paros was lovely at that time of year. And Santorini (we didn't stay in Oia, we were at the other end of the island which is much less touristy).

Sicily also lovely at that time of year, but I'd avoid Taormina personally (apart from a day trip to see the amphitheatre) - it's where all the packages and cruises go, so it has lots of tourists in a small space. It's an island with so much to offer though.

Portugal would be nice - somewhere like Cascais/Estoril for the beach, but you can get to Lisbon in one direction and Sintra in the other, for culture and sightseeing.

Or how about an Agrotourismo in Tuscany? No coast, but amazing scenery and bucketloads of culture. And being cooked for by an Italian Nonna.

Southern Italy will be lovely in late September, still warm but not too hot, wonderful food, masses of history. Not so seasonally organised as the Greek Islands, where most of the taverna owners clear off back to Athens by the end of the season, so places will still be open.
Or what about Venice, once the crowds have thinned out, but before the winter flooding gets underway?
