May half term; Europe, sun and hotel

Hello everyone

I’m thinking about going on holiday next May half term. Wondering if anyone had any recommendations for somewhere in Europe. We’ve previously done Lanzarote but am thinking of a change ( perhaps not the Canaries).

Looking for some warmth and sun. It’s for me and my two DC (12 and 9). Want an easy holiday, ideally AI and nice hotel - not my dream holiday so I’d at least like the surroundings to be good!. Eldest very sporty, youngest likes entertainment. Usually just do 5 nights so don’t need loads of stuff outside the hotel. Love pools but kids not particularly bothered by a beach.

For reference previous holidays have been at Iberostar lanzarote ( but hoping for maybe a bit more to do for my eldest - he’s more a like to play football/volleyball etc than wanting to do organised sport particularly).

Any suggestions of somewhere else to try would be great ( or even another Canary island and hotel I guess).

The options are endless! Cypress? Turkey? Lots of decent all inc hotels at either of those. Balearics might have dodgy weather at that time of year.

thanks - should have said not Turkey.

Yes that was my thinking re the Belearics too, and possibly most of Greece? So I could only really think of the Canaries or Cyprus myself

Crete is gorgeous that time of year

Oh that’s good to know - my DC have been there with relatives and loved Crete

Any reason why not Turkey? Barut hotels are fabulous.

Greece and Italy are both normally lovely that time of year. However, this year the weather was pretty wet and chilly across most of Greece and Italy in the May half term.

Dubai? Hot that time of year

Re Turkey - it’s a number of reasons, although I know alot people who love it ( I have spent a lot of time in Istanbul myself in the past ). It’s a bit hotter than I’d like, and I also have had two single parents friends who have a not great time there, one particularly when one of her children needed quite serious medical attention. I guess travelling on my own with the kids makes me more nervous about this.

Also no doubt ridiculous to others but I’m a bit uncomfortable about the government there ( ditto Dubai).

Up to you OP. Fwiw I went with my daughter when she was 16 to Antalya and we had no bother at all.

OP - Rhodes is my favourite Greek island and my daughter and I have absolutely loved the Cyprotel in Faleraki https://www.jet2holidays.com/beach/greece/rhodes/faliraki/cyprotel-faliraki?ds_rl=1206481&ds_rl=1296397&gbraid=0AAAAADmgmx9lM-IzzfBT-8uY81s_CFhXr&ds_rl=1296397&gclid=Cj0KCQjwuNemBhCBARIsADp74QSX19RBF4SJHGuZnS0xDM7qQq1-aAI6p_BOwSweuY_bdW_tHqY6gAcaAlS_EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

It has amazing pools (several big ones plus a separate water park), is close to the beach and town and is the perfect AI stay. This island itself is absolutely beautiful and the food is amazing.

Of course it's not the best place to go to now, but I think your time of the year sounds perfect.

By the way, my daughter also required medical treatment in Rhodes ones and we were vey impressed by the A&E department at the local hospital.

book Somewhere with heated pool! In most places it’s really needed in May half term time. This year we didn’t have a heated pool and it was my no1 priority for next years booking, more so than location/flight time etc

Lughnasa · 11/08/2023 15:30

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I went to Turkey this year at May half term and it rained every day and wasn’t very warm. In fact we had better weather here in the UK at half term than we did in Turkey!

So I would say Turkey is not a good bet for the weather for that time of year unfortunately.
