Would you go to bed??

We have our holiday booked for 3 weeks time, very excited but going to have to be at the airport for 3am. Which means me having to get up at 12.30am... I usually go to bed around 10pm, is there any point??
I could go super early and try to get a couple of hours I suppose but I don't know if this will make me feel even more tired.

What do others do in this situation?

I do have two children to get up and get ready too, one will be too excited to sleep ! I am planning on just sticking him in bed at about 7pm with the tv on and hope he falls asleep

I would stay up personally

Heywhatawobderfulkindofday · 08/08/2023 08:10

I wouldn't.

purplebluediscorain · 08/08/2023 08:12

I would stay up or try and get everything done before kids go bed and then get into bed yourself for a bit. You may not get another chance to sleep until you are there that night.

cherryassam · 08/08/2023 08:25

For me it would depend on how long the flight is and what I need to do when I arrive - long enough flight I can get a couple of hours on the plane and then easy transfer and quiet day on arrival then I’d stay up, short flight / flight where I need to stay awake or complicated transfer and very busy day on arrival I would probably try and get some sleep by going to bed as early as I can bear

earlybirdsforhols · 08/08/2023 08:26

Only a short flight to Alicante, but we have an 11 month old baby who would make catching any sleep on the flight tricky. We could tag team though ! Transfer is 1.5 hours so definitely enough time to get some sleep on that. Should arrive in resort about midday, and will be summoned to the pool so no sleep until the night time I reckon

Can you stay at the airport the night before? We did this last week - had to be at the airport for 4am so just stayed at the airport, went to bed at 10 and got a few hours kip before waking at 3.50am. We had to drive at the other end however, so were concerned about that.

PandaPacer · 08/08/2023 08:29

I mean at a hotel!! Not in the airport, Tom Hank style, sorry :-)

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/08/2023 08:30

I’d sleep. I would be better on a couple of hours than none at all.

mrsbyers · 08/08/2023 08:30

I’d go to sleep for a couple of hours but then again I’m quite used to shorter power naps

aSofaNearYou · 08/08/2023 08:31

With kids in the mix including a baby, I would try and get as much sleep as possible, so would go to bed really early and take what I got.

If they weren't a factor I'd probably just stay up.

BCSurvivor · 08/08/2023 08:31

I second staying at a hotel near the airport, far less stressful.

CatsOnTheChair · 08/08/2023 08:33

Yep, I go to bed on those trips.
Kids into bed in pants and teeshirt, so all they need is a pair of trousers.
Me into bed, early, for a couple of hours.
Otherwise I was a zombie - as it was I needed to collapse into bed for a couple of hours when I got to my parents. And you need to be awake enough to navigate the airport at the other end.

SunshineAndFizz · 08/08/2023 08:34

Yes get into bed as early as possible, if it was me I'd go straight to bed once the kids were down at 8ish and try to get 4 hours of sleep in. Much better than missing a whole night.

Berlinlover · 08/08/2023 08:35

I had a very early flight a couple of months ago. I went to bed at 8pm and got up at 12.30am. I probably slept for about 3 and a half hours. I was fine until about 5pm the following afternoon and had to head to bed.

caringcarer · 08/08/2023 08:37

I'd go to bed really early the night before so try to get a couple of extra hours sleep. Then on night of travel not bother to go to bed but drink lots of coffee.

TenoringBehind · 08/08/2023 09:01

Any sleep better than none imo, particularly if you have children to look after the next day.
id try and get 2/3 hours before you go

earlybirdsforhols · 08/08/2023 11:02

Yeah I am definitely leaning towards at least some sleep, I will be 15 weeks pregnant when we go aswell so think I'll be extra tired because of that !

Just hoping ds8 sleeps 😩

I'd lie in the morning before and power through, but I am a night owl.

good96 · 08/08/2023 12:55

I wouldn’t go to bed. You risk oversleeping.
i’ve done it before where I lived 2 hours away from the airport. My flight took off at 7am. I overslept and woke up at 4am when I planned to leave at 2:30am. Dropped the car off and got to the gate with 10 mins to spare! Adrenaline was never sooo high!

PinkPondQueen · 08/08/2023 15:50

I'd definitely get an airport hotel. One with a nice restaurant so you can fill your bellies them go straight to bed nice & early! Far less stressful. But I suppose it depends how far you are from the airport.
