Please help me find a suitable holiday

We have three children all secondary age. The eldest is 16 and has ASD. He struggles with holidays due to the lack of his own space. We're away this year to Haven where we can book three bedrooms one of which he gets.

We'd love to take them abroad again but it is very expensive and most of the package holidays just offer two rooms which just won't work. We're flexible as to where we go but we can't camp as DS can't stand it. What would people suggest? Any suggestions? I hate booking holidays and find it really stressful. Any help would be appreciated.

Drive to France and do a Eurocamp, in a mobile home - he can have a separate bedroom! Way less stressful then airports

cherryassam · 06/08/2023 19:16

Driving (with ferry or Chunnel) to a Eurocamp / Centre Parcs / similar holiday park in France / Netherlands / Belgium / Spain could work as @Peppermint81 suggests

Do you think your DC would be ok flying?

HugoDarracott · 06/08/2023 19:26

Thanks, he would be fine flying in fact that would almost be easier because long car journeys can be quite stressful with him.

That opens things up!

When would you be going?
How hot would you like it to be?
What would the budget be?
What sort of activities would you like to do?
Would you prefer Hotel or self catering? (If a 3 bed option were available in both)

HugoDarracott · 06/08/2023 21:47

We're flexible about when we go. Could be Easter, may half term or summer holidays. It can't be scorching though. Mid 20s would be ideal. Not fussed as to a hotel or alternative but a pool is essential. Budget probably no more than 5k but that would need to be all inclusive.

Would he feel he’d missed out if he didn’t come with you, or would he prefer to stay at home?
If he’d prefer home, is there anyone who could stay with him?

cherryassam · 06/08/2023 22:08

May half term is often a great time to go to the Med - The Balearics might be a good option as they’re short flights and usually short transfers

Playa Bella Apartments in San Antonio, Ibiza has 3 bedroom apartments in the hotel https://www.playa-bella.es/en - can be booked through Jet2 as a package

Aparthotel Aquasol in Palma Nova Majorca also has 3 bedroom apartments https://www.aquasol.info/en - again can be booked through Jet2

Other options with 3 bedroom apartments through Jet 2 that might be worth looking at:

Real Marina Residence, Algarve
Pineda Park Apartments, La Pineda, Costa Dorada
Regency Country Club, Los Cristianos, Tenerife
Nau Salema Beach Village, Algarve
Colina Village, Algarve
Quinta Pedra dos Bicos, Algarve
Pine Cliffs Resort, Algarve

@PrinceHaz I think he'd feel he was missing out. He's conflicted because he knows holidays are normal for most people but he finds them challenging. We have wondered about sending him home early but he'd not cope flying alone. We've also considered one of us staying home with him and joining part way through but it rather takes away from it being a family holiday.

@cherryassam thank you so much, these look like real possibilities, thanks so much for taking the time to post them.

No problem at all! Let me know if there’s any more info you need.

underneaththeash · 07/08/2023 22:02

Often you can get a basic extra room at a very low cost if you book via booking.com.
we’ve booked a hotel room for next year in Portugal - 2 bed suite that theoretically could fit DS in, but we’ve also booked an extra single room for him on booking.com.

HugoDarracott · 08/08/2023 00:05

Thanks @underneaththeash that's a great idea and gives us another option. Beginning to think a holiday should be possible.

What about a villa with a pool? Jet2 offer packages with flights and car hire. Would be well under £5K then money left over for meals out/in (minimum cooking).

One of my DC has ASD to and I think our hotel/AI days are over and they'd cope much better with the space and privacy of a villa.

Comeondelicious · 16/04/2024 07:12

a Cruise. there are some wonderful deals about. you'll need 2 cabins but plenty of space around the ship for privacy/to do his own thing...Good luck! we find MSC cruises good value

Roselilly36 · 16/04/2024 07:30

As above poster said, villa holiday with private pool, works better for us now our DS’s have grown up, more private, more space. Can work out cheaper than two rooms in a hotel too.

Bjorkdidit · 16/04/2024 08:40

We've been here in Lanzarote before. Small villas with 2 or 3 bedrooms and private pool.

Walking distance to supermarket, bakery, marina/restaurants and beach. Lots to do on the island such as waterpark, volcano park, caves, watersports etc.

Can be booked direct, via booking.com or via many package operators like Jet2, villa plus etc.
