Where can you safely (as much as possible anyway) swim in the sea?

We went on holiday to Ibiza in June and the one thing Ds aged 11 absolutely loved more than anything was being able to swim in the shallow areas of the beaches we visited (I am talking about very close to the shore / they had areas sectioned off specifically for swimming watched by lifeguards, where his feet could still touch the bottom). We would like to find somewhere similar to go next year, I’m half tempted to just book the same place but would like to go somewhere different. But I’m actually not sure where to consider? I was looking at some areas of the Canary Islands and even Cape Verde but reading reviews it seems like the sea can be very windy and choppy and unsafe. Looking for experiences and recommendations of hotels even if anyone has any suggestions?!

Coral Bay in Cyprus

Very gentle shelf to the beach (so you can go out miles and still be within your depth) very calm sea and warm

Yes! This is a beautiful beach and the sea was lovely there.

Cala D'Or Mallorca has about half a dozen absolutely beautiful cove beaches.

Also Melliha Bay on Malta, plus you can get a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon on Comino which has a shallow swimming area.

I am currently in Northern Cyprus. The sea is warm and calm, like a bath.

Med always going to be safer than the Atlantic ocean!
Greek Islands, Turkish coast, balearics.

If you have a secluded bay that's going to be safer than a long stretch of beach with flat profile which will be more prone to rips.

Thank you to everyone who has replied.

I’ve been looking at Coral Bay in Cyprus and it looks right up our street 😁😁 (well, you know what I mean)!

Lots of other lovely ideas too.

We live in Norfolk and have just come back from a holiday to the coast but sadly too choppy and unsafe for swimming. We need the calm waters and some heat!

Thanks all.

Also, São Martinho do Porto in Portugal has a lovely sheltered bay.

Cefalu in Sicily
sandy beach for miles, shallow and calm. DD (7) stayed in sea for hours.

Yep! Or San Vito lo Capo :) Both places are so beautiful.

Cala Pada - Tui magic life. I will say that the food was awful, it was like a school dinner hall 😳 so even though it was all inclusive we ended up eating out a lot; but the location and resort itself was amazing. We also went on the little boat ferry thing from the beach to Santa Eulalia (not sure if I’ve spelt that right) and the beach there was even nicer, that’s the beach that Ds really loved swimming in. Beautiful place.

You need to think of the Med and not the Atlantic. The UK, Canary Islands and Portugal are Atlantic coasts so rough seas. Great once they want to surf but not calm clear paddling.
Tsivili in Zante has a lovely beach which shelves out a very long way. Good family resort as well. We liked the Phoenix Beach hotel which fronts straight on to the beach. Only B&B when we went but has a restaurant.

So why not go back to Ibiza but the resort you preferred this time?

Just fancy a change really. We would like to explore another country.

If you are looking for similar Ports Des Torrent in Ibiza is amazing, it has a couple of hotels and the beach is a little cove so really safe for swimming. We have stayed in both hotels and both were really good with lots to do.

Cyprus - east coast specifically (ayia napa area) you can go out for ages and still touch the bottom on lovely Sandy beaches. Some have naturally sectioned off areas by rocks/islands making it impossible to go out further too

protaras or ayia napa in cyprus, but no lifeguards

Tons of lifeguards on beaches in ayia napa area
