Is anyone else 'scarred' from a holiday?

I used to have such a thirst for travel. I used to travel far and wide.

This year we decided to go to the Caribbean. We went for two weeks at large expense, where we went to a couple of islands. Despite being the 'dry' season we got absolutely dreadful weather. The hotels we chose were just crap, and really expensive. My sister got food upset. We got robbed (not much money). We got scammed. We had a few unpleasant interactions with people. We spent the entire trip being hot, sticky, sweaty, and uncomfortable. We never felt relaxed because there were people watching us at all times (I was travelling with my sister). It was a complete and utter waste of £4k

It's honestly put me off travelling to somewhere off the beaten track for life. I'll stick to Europe and Thailand. Right now, even leaving the UK has me a bit hmm. Has anyone else felt like this after a holiday? Did you ever get the desire to travel again?

Whereabouts did you go? We've had a few bad experiences but not enough to put us off travelling as we love it.

You felt hot and sticky? Well you are going to feel that in Thailand or any humid country. If you don't like the heat then you are picking weird places.
Being robbed is indeed shit though.

Some of the Caribbean has high crime rates and ime is not worth the money.
there’s loads of options for holidays other than Europe and Thailand though!

Friends of ours said that they would only ever go to the Caribbean if they stayed on a private island or in a gated complex.

Righto

The Caribbean is hardly off the beaten track - where did you go? Jamaica and Trinidad are the only dodgy islands I can think of.

I went to Olu Deniz once.

Lovely place.

Kids were sick the entire week. I don't like talking about it.

I felt like that after backpacking in India. Similar tale of scams and food poisoning. I didn't eat curry for several years afterwards. Also wasn't getting on well with my travel partner.

I did backpack again elsewhere and enjoy it afterwards, but my taste in holidays has naturally changed as I've got older. No more backpacking for me!

But I know people who have loved India. And I've loved other high-scam countries which other friends hated. Quite a lot of luck involved really.

Gosh thats not my experience at all. I love that I can turn my scam filter to almost off when I go to the carribean which has some of the friendliest laid back happiest people on the planet. I always notice how miserable and selfish lots of British people are when I get back.

Maybe I've just been lucky with the islands I've visited. I'm sorry you didn't have a good holiday.

Traveling around Morocco. Everyone expects money. And I got the shits, plus it was freezing in June. A highlight was the suffocating sandstorm (honest, it was an experience!).

I was planning on traveling the old silk route but realised I wouldn't like that culture so didn't.

My only time in the Caribbean was in Tobago which was lovely apart from the drunk taxi driver.

Interesting reads. I don't travel much

I've been to Jamaica and loved it, gated complex though and high security 5* for our honeymoon. Felt safe though and I love the Caribbean laid back vibe with beautiful beaches.

I have family in Florida and up until I was about 21 went every year from birth, was caught in hurricanes numerous times, mandatory evacuations etc. they are quite scary. Last time I was there, hurricane Irma hit and we evacuated our villa and wen to my Aunt and Uncles who weren't expecting to be hit badly, where our villa was had a mandatory evacuation, it changed paths and hit my aunt and uncles area pretty bad. No electric for 5 days with no air con and hurricane shutters down. We spent days helping the locals repair roofs, clear up trees and debris.

Needing to wee so badly on an open topped bus tour in Brooklyn and the guy wouldn’t stop. I thought I was doing myself some internal damage. I then couldn’t wee when I did get off, eventually did and vomited and collapsed and the rest of the day was a wipe out.
I will NEVER do an open topped bus tour, or indeed go to Brooklyn, again.
