Italy cruise advice please!!

Never been on a cruise before,
My mother and I both want to see Italy.
We both work in schools

So what are the pros/ cons of Italy in April vs August

I've been overthinking, I don't mind a bit of rain especially if we're in a city. But would it spoil the views to visit Pompeii, Sardinia and Siena in April?

Will Tuscany be lush and green?
Would the views be spoiled by low cloud?

Or would august be too hot?

I was preferring April as we could then do a Spain family holiday in summer (to appease the kids!) also cities are awful to visit in a heatwave!

There is the May half term but it would be a bit tight for travel either side, although doable but there might not be as many options as we would be tight on departure day

PLEASE any advice

Also any general advice for cruise newbies!

Also if we went in April one cruise we've seen departs from Rome and we may add an extra day or two in time before flying home because obviously we are aware that we won't get to see everything (although how can you ever see 'everything' in Rome!)

Also worried about delayed/ cancelled flights before a cruise so would prefer to travel a day or two before

Would want to book through a travel agent for this reason also

What are cruise excursions like??

I've been to Florence and Bologna (same holiday)

Getting excited but overthinking!

Never been on a cruise, but I’d avoid Italy in July/august if you want to look at cities due to the heat. We did Sorrento/Naples/Pompeii/Herculaneum at Easter once and it was perfect. Walking in Tuscany in early June - also perfect - I’d do Easter or whit if I were you.

I would also go in April if you want to sightsee, it will be so much more comfortable. We have done Italy in June, July, August and October and the latter was so much nicer to walk around in. Naples and Pompeii was still very warm even on autumn.

That was my thoughts too,

I just had a vision of the Lake District in April, near where I live (it's beautiful) and realised that some days you can't see anything due to low cloud and a lot of trees don't even have leaves!

It would be the first/ second week of April due to school holidays

Also would it be choppy? I got sea sick on the Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry but that's different waters and I think was November! 😂🚢🤢

We went on a cruise for the first time in May half term this year and 3 of the ports were in Italy. We did a day trip to Herculaneum and I have to say it was really hot which made it uncomfortable to walk round in. I can't imagine what it would be like in August!

MissAmbrosia · 30/07/2023 21:50

We did Naples and Herculaneum in May this year and it was hot! I wouldn't do it in August for sure. Everything also gets really crowded during the summer months.

Thank you all, it's more expensive in august too!

April it is 😀

How were the trips? Were they well organised @WhatHaveIDone21

Heat in August is insane! Ok for a lying by the pool in the shade holiday but definitely not for sightseeing in Pompeii, Rome etc,
However, I cannot comment about April but in the summer there little to no feeling of movement on cruise ships in the Med, probably the same in spring unless you are really unlucky.

@shakeitoffshakeacocktail yes it was well organised. The guide we had was so knowledgeable and made it really enjoyable. We got off at one of the other ports but didn't do an organised tour - just had a wander around which was lovely too. We went with Royal Caribbean.
