Rights when flights cancelled

I’m just after info to see where we stand. We arrived at Gatwick this morning with two very excited kids only to find out our flight had been cancelled. They’d actually rebooked us on to a flight yesterday but we knew nothing about it! We’ve been booked on a new flight in the morning at 5.30am but have had to book a very expensive hotel in Gatwick for the night.
I then checked and saw that next weeks flight has also been cancelled and we’ve been moved onto one a day later. There are no other flights for the day we were due to leave Italy so I’ve had to book another hotel for next Sunday night as I can’t extend our original accommodation booking. Currently £700 out of pocket on last minute hotels so just wondering where we might stand on compensation / insurance for missed flight for any of it? Any thoughts appreciated and please be kind, it’s been quite a day! Thanks :)

I’d wager you don’t get a penny op

clearly given no one else turned up for the flight, you had missed the email advising you of the cancellation.

Do you have travel insurance? May be worth contacting them when you get back to see if there's anything you can claim from them if easyJet are saying no x

Thought I’d just follow this is as back from our trip today. Travel insurance couldn’t help as changes had been made to flights before we started our trip. Fair enough, I just wanted to check. The issue would have arisen whether I’d received and seen the email from EasyJet or not. And I do check junk every day. I own a very busy business where all correspondence is through email.
Even if we’d received the email and travelled on the Saturday we would have had to buy accommodation for then as well. The unfortunate situation was both Sunday outward and return flights were cancelled for our summer holiday which wasn’t a package (wasn’t possible to be a package. And no others to Venice were available the same days. So just chalk it up as a £700 life experience! And the extra day we had yesterday actually really made our holiday - we were the only Brits at a wonderfully retro and crazy Italian hotel. We had a fab night out and my 11 year old daughter lived out her dream of singing Lana del Rey and Lorde to a packed (Italian and German) audience (karaoke!)

Surely you're entitled to something?
