Costa Rica - travel by car

We are going to Costa Rica next week and have hired a 4 wheel drive to get around. DH has just read if we stop at restaurants we should pay the guards to watch the car?! Is this right? Are cars frequently targeted in CR?

@Orangesandlemons82 I’ve attached the parking section from Audley Travel’s advice on driving in Costa Rica. It’s easy to find: “Why you should consider self-drive in Costa Rica”. Basically if there’s clearly a parking attendant, pay them. This is normal in quite a few African countries too and costs very little.
