How much was your holiday?

We're looking at booking a last minute holiday. Like going on Monday! But prices seem to still be sky high.
If you've booked/ gone on holiday in the summer holidays, 4/5 star all inclusive for a week somewhere in Europe this year, how much did you pay? Just wondering whether prices have changed compared to people that booked a while ago. 2 adults, 1 child.

Wow - we've booked 2 weeks in Florida in Sept for 2 x adults £1500 - that's flights/bags and hotel. Our daughter, partner and 2 x kids are joining us for one week and have paid £1600. There are deals if you know where to look although I am ex airline crew and I was lucky enough to have great concessions so I now refuse to pay extortionate prices 😂

Check airports. It's much cheaper to fly from Glasgow than it is from Bristol. I was really bored a while ago and looked at all the different airports and destinations, the price difference between Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland was huge, and even between reasonably close airports the price difference was significant.
Even factoring in time and expense spent travelling to an airport further away you can still save £££ (although possibly too much hassle with a 5yr old!).
As for how can people afford it, many can't; some may go in term time when it's 1/2 price; some might save for five + years.

Yes that's a good deal, but it's September... that makes a huge difference! Dh regularly has to fly to the US or Aus for work, the pricing difference is huge between peak holiday times and all other time.

All in it was 4.5 k. This was 16 nights travelling to several locations in Japan (for one adult and 1 teen). Included:

  • flights (cheaper at this time of year because whether it's hot)
  • Nice hotels - usually four star
  • Train transport all over Japan
  • All food (admittedly a lot of 7/11 food)
  • Activities

That was an expensive holiday for me, but not too bad when I compare it to others.

this. We have about 6 airports within a 2 hour drive, which to me is a reasonable amount of time to spend travelling to an airport. I’ll go with whichever of these is the cheapest.

I have travelled further for a very good deal, but on the whole it’s a bit of a pain in the arse.

ArianaGrande · 31/07/2023 23:51

We just booked a week in Ibiza. £2800 but that’s for 2 rooms as the kids are teenagers and need beds rather than sofa beds.
Bed and breakfast in a nice hotel.

Last year we paid £6k for two weeks all inclusive in Majorca so a lot more expensive this year.

No late deals it seems.

flashbac · 01/08/2023 07:02

Prices are awfully high. Just booked 8 night turkey AI for October half term. £2300 for 2 adults and 2 kids (Inc supposedly 1 free child place), at smallish 3 star Hotel. Couldn't sleep all night thinking about the cost! Pre pandemic used to go got 250 pp!

Tawstrong · 01/08/2023 07:32

I went back to booking independently and finding places where the locals holiday. Look for random places in Italy, Spain Portugal etc.

For example this family spa hotel in Ischia is 599 Euros pp, often half price for kids. Less than £800 for flights to Naples. Approx £2.5k for 1 week.

Beautiful place, but cheaper prices because it’s marketed to local tourists.

Although decor might be more dated, I’ve always found places like this spotless and you know the food will be fab as Italians won’t put up with crap food!

Compared with a Sorrento holiday just down the coast marketed at Brits for double the price, perhaps with nicer decor but food not as good.

October half term much cheaper and weather often good/ sea has warmed up (as opposed to May when water will be freezing!)

@flashbac that is a really great price for the summer to be fair, I know it’s a lot more than you used to pay but it’s a steal in today’s market. Especially for all inclusive!

Tawstrong · 01/08/2023 07:39

Actually that Ischia holiday is more like £3k For August.

Tawstrong · 01/08/2023 07:40

@ArianaGrande thats a real bargain- seems like there are deals to be had

ArianaGrande · 01/08/2023 08:25

AI has been convenient for us but now we have teenagers we would like to try eating out.

I would you to stay in a Villa, however these do go quickly. I couldn’t find any for our dates at all.

With late deals you have to be really flexible, for example we didn’t fancy Canaries or Portugal (cold sea) and Balearics were preferred.
Mainland Spain has more flights so more choice.

ArianaGrande · 01/08/2023 08:25

*I would like

CrispsnDips · 01/08/2023 08:33

£3,500
three adults, two children
Lanzarote
end of August
BUT only two star hotel and self catering
close to beach, short transfer time, daytime flight times
CAN’T WAIT!

WomanAtWork · 01/08/2023 08:34

if you’re willing to take a risk and find somewhere with an indoor pool as back up, Majorca is often about 24 degrees in October half term. Then maybe you could do something cheap and cheerful on August?

Now we have school aged kids we avoid big expensive summer AI holidays as it doesn’t feel like good value for money.

Just came back from two weeks in Northern Europe, we travelled around some beautiful places, went to theme parks, stayed in gites/mobile homes/b&bs with really nice indoor and outdoor pools etc. Was a monster trip to plan, had it all booked up in Feb, but in total including all spends it was <£5k for 2 adults 2 kids.

If I just wanted an easy week away, I guess I would opt for earlier in July and take kids out of school, or do Canaries in October or May half term. We did a May half term at Centreparc/Disney Paris, that was really good. Worth thinking about.

mamaduckbone · 01/08/2023 11:40

We paid £4k for a weeks all inclusive, 2 adults and 2 teens. Booked in Feb. Out of curiosity I looked to see how much it would have been if we'd booked last minute and it was almost £1k more! Last minute deals seem to be a thing of the past, unless you're really lucky

@Tawstrong it's for October half term but I think our school's half term is a week before everyone else's so it would have been more!

DanceMumTaxi · 01/08/2023 19:46

10 days all inclusive in Turkey during school summer holidays is around 4k. That’s in a decent 4 (officially 5 on their website, but it’s not) 2 adults, 10 yr old and 7 yr old. We did get a free child place though.
