How do I go about booking a one week holiday in Bavaria for 2 weeks time! Anyone been?

Bavaria is quite large. Where do you want to go? How are you travelling? Do you want a scenic or city holiday or a mix of both? How many people?
One tip, if you are looking for accommodation on Trivago. Use a VPN and select a server in Germany.

@FelicityFlops, thank you for replying to my ridiculously vague post! I don't even know where I want to go. I just want to go somewhere nice with 2 older teens (well, one is an adult now!) and DH. So 4 of us. A mix of countryside and city would be perfect. Somewhere straightforward to get to from Gatwick would be great.

Here are some ideas, you may need to scroll a bit and possibly see if there is an equivalent page on the UK Holiday Pirates site.
I would suggest basing yourselves in Munich and taking day trips (public transport is excellent) to the places you want to visit/walk. You could also take the train over to Salzburg for a day out, if that appealed.
I would definitely advise looking for accommodation, in the first instance, on Trivago, but then contacting places you are interested in directly, as you may get a better price or deal.

Will you be hiring a car? Wanting to stay in one place or travel around?

Vettrianofan · 27/07/2023 10:00

We stayed in Munich and did a day trip to Salzburg. We also visited Neuschwanstein Castle, the famous beer hall, and other tourist type places. We had two weeks there and would love to go back! Went in 2008.

One word of warning, Munich is very expensive, though well placed if you want to travel by train.

And if you do travel by train, consider the Bayern ticket for day trips. 50 euros covers all 4 of you and can take you as far as Salzburg or Lindau on Bodensee / Lake Constance.

Fab! Holiday juices flowing already, thank you!
I think we would def hire a car.
Is Nuremberg anywhere in the vicinity? I've heard it's nice.

Nuremberg has some great museums, including a railway museum.

Ingolstadt is really interesting and pretty in parts - has some great self-guided walks.

Augsburg also has some great sights - and another railway museum.

I really want to go to Ulm and Lindau.

Nürnberg is lovely, around 2 hours away from Munich by car or a direct train. It's still hilly but more lower mountain ranges than Munich.
Great museums, food. I would say you see more if you have a car from there, lots of great smaller towns around the area. Good for walking, lots of caves you can explore, paddle down the river Pegnitz in a kayak.

The area around Nürnberg is called Franken/Franconia

It's holiday season in Germany and it's a popular area from every part of Germany.

I lived there for 3.5 years and we have been back three times with DD, she was primary age though.

DH is Bavarian and we go a few times a year.
We usually stay near Munich or Nuremberg.
We do Airbnb but the whole property not just rooms and swim in lakes, go to water parks, spa, City centre, museums etc etc.
The Teens love it

Chiemsee is lovely. And there are so many pretty villages and towns. I'd not bother with Garmisch-Partenkirchen though.
