just wondering how strict they are haven't flown with them before and wondered if a small rucksack would be ok to bring?

There's no single answer. Different crews, different airports, different days. I fly with easyJet often with the allowed small soft hand luggage bag (over shoulder sports bag type) and my local airport never asks to check it in the box, others do.

Best bet is to pack it and then measure it. If it fits in the dimensions when it's packed there's no reason to think they won't accept it.

yes of course i fly a lot with ryan air and they are very forgiving these days but could change in an instant i guess!!

Backpacks that fit under the seat in front are ok. They just look for oversized suitcase type cases typically.

People take the piss with the size of their carry on bags. One on the flight I was in today was bigger than my checked bag. Pisses me off when then ram them into the overhead bins squashing my modest ruck sack and its contents.

So variable though as PP said.

The main thing is that the bag needs to fit under the seat in front of you. So a soft structure bag that is not overfilled will be ok even if it’s not quite the same as the measurements.

that said, you can buy easy jet carry on bags from Amazon very cheaply and they fit under the seats well and hold a good volume.
