Would you travel to a Greece this weekend

With other islands also on high alert for fires, would you travel to one of them this weekend? We are due to fly on Sunday to Crete with teen DS, DH says it's ok as no fires have on the island but seeing the news has just made me think it is a bad idea. How do others feel? Anyone else travelling there this weekend?

No I would absolutely not travel to any Greek Islands. Don't want to become a burden on the local emergency services or become a statistic.

Try telling that to the poor Greek residents who are crying out for tourists to still go. A lot of the islands are still recovering from the effects of Covid and now they're concerned thousands of people will cancel their holidays because of the sensationalist media. They need the revenue from tourists every summer. The fires are affecting a very small part of only a couple of islands.

Yes of course! It wouldnt cross my mind to cancel unless advised by the FCO or tour operator.

Those saying they wouldn’t go probably don’t do foreign holidays in the first place. Greece needs tourists more than ever.

Every year countries are on High Alert. It is normal procedure.

So you would travel to areas at risk of fire? How is that helping the Greek people??

You do realise areas at risk of fire is every Greek island, every summer? There's more than one Greek island and plenty of them are not experiencing any issues whatsoever. Would I travel to an area of Rhodes where several hotels have burnt down and a huge clean up process is taking place? No. Would I travel to Kos or Zakynthos, where both Greeks and tourists alike are happily going about their lives? Yes. There's a huge difference.

People travel to areas if the world where there are risk most years all the time: summer fires, sand fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, heatwave warnings, etc.

Sadly this isn't the first time Greece has had summer fires. It won't be the last. It won't be the only area either.

Should people travel to a resort where there is an active fire people are being evacuated from or is in the midst of a clean up process? No.

Should they continue to visit countries at at some risk where the residents rely on tourism for their livelihood but where there is no immediate active event? Yes, if it's safe to do so. It won't help the residents who need the money from tourists if people stay away forever.

No I wouldn’t. I love the current rainy weather in the UK. I would travel to Greece outside high summer season when it’s not as hot only.

I’m currently in Greece (Thassos) and it’s absolutely fine here. It’s actually cooler today (about 24 degrees) as there was a storm last night on the mainland and it’s totally dropped the temps. Lovely today.

gogomoto · 27/07/2023 17:19

Yes, big country. They have fire alerts every summer

SamW98 · 27/07/2023 18:07

Absolutely. I would even go to Rhodes away from the affected areas.

My mate runs a bar on the north of the island and he’s open as usual.

Ive been in Greece for previous heatwaves and also seen wildfires - it happens most summers.

I would get on a flight tomorrow
