European city break - Christmas

Lozzie191 · 23/07/2023 11:48

I am looking for recommendations for a European city break for 3-4 nights in early December for a mix of Christmas markets/culture/eating.

We like somewhere with a traditional old town feel, not really into commercial type places with skyscrapers, etc. Somewhere which is visually pretty, but with some things to do and a bit of history (enough for 3 days). Don't need wild nightlife but nice restaurants/pubs/a few bars with a local feel. And a nice Christmas market! I absolutely love Krakow and Prague, particularly with the beautiful main squares, but I have visited both a few times, so after somewhere new. Recommendations welcome.

Budapest ticks all your boxes. There are 2 central Christmas markets, easy walking distance or metro between them. The one in the square at the Basilica is stunning.

Another vote for Munich

And again for Munich, but its getting very expensive even pre covid (been going regularly for over 30 years)

Hamburg! Much better than Munich IMO

We went to Munich last year for the Chrismas markets, and it was lovely. Lots of different Christmas markets, each with its own unique feel, and some nice Bavarian style bars and restaurants.

We added on a night in Erding, at the ThermeSpa, which was really great fun too, and a simple train trip from the city centre.

I was going to suggest this.
Last year we stayed in Erding and went into Munich by train.
Nuremberg and Freiburg are lovely too

From Munich you can easily do a day trip to Salzburg on the train.

Rome, beautiful in December

Vienna is absolutely gorgeous at Christmas.

Aachen

Ghent or Antwerp. Both packed with history, Christmas markets, loads of restaurants, bars and cafes. I'd recommend a trip to the Gravensteen in Ghent, plus the Belfort and St Bavo"s.

Vienna is beautiful at Christmas time, with many of the old buildings decorated. Crammed with art and history, plenty of cosy bars and interesting restaurants, interesting shops and auction room. Also, a lovely atmosphere in the city.

Rome, Venice, Amsterdam or Vienna. But go for Christmas itself, as most of those places are open for the duration. Nothing better than visiting a world-class museum or gallery on Christmas Day, and escaping all the nonsense at home!

mathanxiety · 23/07/2023 16:24

Vienna, Salzburg, Bratislava.
