Ile de Re, France

We have just booked cheap flights to Limoges in September so we can go and see my sister. We fancy having a few days by the sea at Ile de Re, or my sisters recommendation St Palais sur mer. We haven't been to the coast before, any recommendations? What to see, where to eat, what not to miss etc? We fancy a few days self catering and a night or two in a nice hotel/chateau.

Ile de Re is lovely. You could stay on the island La Rochelle is very nice and you can visit Ile de Re very easily from there. I've been to St Palais. Nice beach but nothing out of the ordinary. I would head inland for a chateau type stay. The Cognac area is nice and about halfway between Limoges and Ile de Re.

On Ile de Re itself I liked La Flotte and St Martin de Re. Both very picturesque ports. Looked like they had some amazing seafood restaurants but sadly I was with fussy DC and didn't get to sample them.

We stayed near La Flotte on the Isle de Re and it's beautiful. Eye-wateringly expensive though

Worth staying on the island for couple of nights and you can cycle the whole thing which is lots of fun.

La Flotte is lovely. We stayed in St Maire, which is quieter, and cycled there. It’s one of my favourite places.

Thanks very much, my sister will suggest places and restaurants, but she spends money like its going out of fashion, so I need some more balanced views. Don't mind spending as the flights for 2 only cost £129, but equally don't want to go over the top either.
