We've booked flights to Naples at the end of August and plan to have two nights in the city before getting the train down to the Sorrento area.

We're planning on staying in Sorrento and then going to Pompeii, Amalfi and Capri for day trips. Does anyone have any other suggestions of places to visit or even stay for a couple of nights?

Also also suggestions of decent areas or hotels in Naples would be greatly appreciated please

Thanks in advance!

Herculaneum is great, and easy on the train. There is also some lovely walking round Vesuvius, but it will be HOT.

Boat trip to capri is nice too, and being on the water will cool things down.

The catacombs are quite interesting and I imagine will be cool. There is a sort of semi island/promontory where the Castel dell’ovo is located with lots of nice restaurants on (you can walk to it across a walkway).

Pompeii is great but there is little shelter - take a parasol or large hat and water. We had a guide, well worth it to help you work out what’s what.

If you have time, go to the temples at Paestum, near Salerno

Ravello is a beautiful place to visit. Loads of buses go there. Up in the mountains past Amalfi.

Ischia is amazing

Second the suggestion of Paestum. We love the San Francisco hotel in Naples. Has a beautiful roof terrace with a pool and lovely views over the sea.

Lucia574 · 19/07/2023 16:45

Sorry, that should be San FrancEsco hotel.

Another vote for the catacombs
Also in Pompei walk into the town. The Church of the Holy Rosary has a tower. There is a lift you can use for a few euro. You get a panoramic Birds Eye view of Pompeii.
You definitely need a guided tour of Pompei to make sense of it. We found a great lady on Airbnb experiences

Yes, just wandering around the centre of Naples trying the street food and the traditional pizza places with marble-topped tables is worth at least a day. It’s a very atmospheric, very walkable city and the food is fantastic. An underground tour and San Severo chapel are well worth seeing in the centre.

The archaeological museum is meant to be great, but when I went virtually all areas were closed so we didn’t stop.

I’d forgotten about the archeological museum, it is indeed awesome.

When you are in Amalfi definitely go up to Ravello

We did the Naples underground tour and also a 2 hour guided tour of Herculaneum. And a late afternoon walking tour of the historical centre that was very good. We stayed in the Relais Castel Nuovo apartments near the port which were very central and good for public transport - including the airport bus which stops across the road. We also got the funicular up the hill and walked back down via the Spanish Quarter. I really liked it. Lots of comments that it's filthy and dangerous which was not at all my impression - though you should keep a close eye on your belongings. Very vibrant. We had great food at La Lazzara round the corner from our apartment,
