Day trips from NYC

Going to NYC for a week next week. I quite fancy a day trip out of the city to a beach, or river, or pretty town etc. By train. Any recommendations? I wanted to visit the Hamptons but looks like it’s too far for a day trip.

Get the train (Metro North) to the Hudson Valley and visit Cold Spring and/or Beacon. It leaves from Grand Central (so another plus) and travels up alongside the Hudson (sit on the left of the train when leaving NYC). Takes 75 mins to Cold Spring. You'll see West Point across the river as you travel up.

Photos are of Cold Spring when I visited last year. It's a lovely little town. Great little shops ( I recommend Cold Spring Apothecary) and cafes and you can sit and eat by the river and enjoy those stunning views.

Beacon is 2 stops further, and has a great art gallery if that's your thing.

Trains are every 30 mins and reliable (and way nicer than UK trains).

You're welcome @VenusClapTrap ! Enjoy! It's a lovely day out and super-easy. Tickets are easy to book on the MTA app. Grab a coffee from Joe's in Grand Central before you board the train and sit back and enjoy the views of the Hudson on the way there. It's one of my favourite days out from NYC.

We went to Coney Island a few weeks ago. The beach is lovely and the fairgrounds were fun too! Takes about an hour on the subway. D/F/N/Q trains from central Manhattan.

Philadelphia is a great city to visit. Or if you want a beach going to rockaway by ferry is nice.

if you want hiking you can actually get on the Appalachian trail on the weekend only.

I quite fancy visiting Coney Island but it wouldn’t be dh’s cup of tea at all, unfortunately. Philadelphia I used to go to for work, so I’ve already visited all the historic bits.

I would like to go to a beach, so Rockaway could work for an odd day.

thanks!

Hiking the Appalachian Trail would be amazing, but I think that’s a bit far for a day trip.

@VenusClapTrap no there is a bit set up for day only for part of the Appalachian trail. I’m doing it next week so I’ll let you know how it goes.

Hudson Valley is coming out a winner.

We got the ferry to Sandy hook. And then hired a bike to the beach. Ferries are at set times so be organised.

@Newjobformoremoney how did you get on? Am interested in this - we're in NYC this coming summer and would be keen to do this if you could tell me how! Thank you!
