International roaming - best option?

Not sure this is the right place to post, but it's definitely travel related! I'm on Giffgaff for my phone and find that it's really awkward when I travel to the US or other non-EU countries because it doesn't have roaming. This has actually really spoiled a few trips, for example when I was really in a bind and ended up paying a fortune in PAYG data to do something I needed to do. I kept meaning to sort it and find a new company but never got around to it!

My main reason for having stuck with Giffgaff this long is the price - I pay £6 a month for a Goodybag, which is ridiculously cheap, I know! Is there any option at all that offers me a monthly SIM-only deal AND international roaming? I'm aware I'd need to pay a bit more than I do now, but preferably not more than £20ish a month. I would rather not be locked into a contract and have the option of cancelling at any time. Any suggestions or recommendations?

Esims are the way to go.

Esims are the way to go.

What does that mean?

What does that mean?

I assume it means getting a local sim (esim are electronic rather than physical) for whichever country you visit. Can cost in especially for longer visits.
