Can't renew child EHIC

mapletreebench · 16/07/2023 11:26

We are a family with 4 children. All EHIC cards are valid aside from youngest, who has her own card (not a dependent on ours). GOV website says I can't apply for a new one (GHIC) as she is under 16, and there isn't an option put her on my existing one (or make a new adult/dependent application).

Does anybody know how to get around this? I've exhausted Google! Thanks in advance!

Is it EHIC or GHIC cards you all have?
I'd redo the application in your name and input all your dcs details as part of that

Thanks for your reply. We've all got GHIC apart from youngest DS, who has EHIC. DH didnt think we needed to add her to his new GHIC as her EHIC was valid. I've tried re-applying in my name but get an automated response saying I already have a card!

What does it say if you put her name in on the application? (use your NI number on the application)

At what point does it tell you that you have a card?

mapletreebench · 16/07/2023 11:57

It only goes so far as to allow us to put in her name and DOB and then stops the process, saying she's under 16 so can't have her own card. It gives no other options!

If the ehic is valid you don't need a ghic as well but a new child's card can only be applied for with an adult's. Just reapply for a parent one as well.

There is a GHIC link here that allows you to contact them if you're unable to do the online application. Also has a phone number

It won't let me reapply for a parent one unfortunately!

You have to contact the overseas health care service to get a child’s when you already have a valid one as a parent, there is an online form you fill in with your query. It’s such a backwards system.

mapletreebench · 16/07/2023 15:12

It is, yes! Thank you!

Just to add to the voices - yes, you have to contact them for this scenario, you can’t apply normally. Have to add them at the same time as parents one to do it online. Hope it works out easily enough!

MegCleary · 16/07/2023 15:23

Just had this, daughters EHIC expired and we had to add her to my Ghic just sent them all mine and her details and they replied in a day and said hers in the post

CatsOnTheChair · 16/07/2023 15:25

Glad you've got your answer, but can I just say thank you for prompting me to search out ours for our upcoming holiday! Thankfully they are valid til next year, so I don't need to do an urgent renewal!

mapletreebench · 16/07/2023 17:37

Thank you all. At least I know I'm not cracking up - I kept going round in circles, getting nowhere! I'll contact them first thing tomorrow 😊

Sorry to rehash old message, but did you get anywhere with this? I’m having exactly the same problem. Going round and round in circles.

See https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/healthcare-abroad/apply-for-a-free-uk-global-health-insurance-card-ghic/, which says:

Every member of your family needs their own card. You can add your spouse, civil partner and children to your application when you apply. You must enter your own details first and apply for any additional cards when prompted.

If you've already completed your application and want to add additional family members contact NHS Overseas Healthcare Services. You'll need to give us your reference number, name, date of birth and address so we can access your record.
