France passport rules

I am travelling to France in August and my passport will be issued within 10yrs on my entry into France but not on departure date. Expiry date has plenty of time left on it. I am travelling on the eurotunnel. I checked and doubled checked on UK government website and this meets the rules. However, I am reading conflicting things online about passport needing to be issued within 10yrs even on departure from France date. Has anyone travelled recently and k ow whether I will be ok. Currently panicking!

It needs to be valid (within the 10 years, not the extra months tacked on) for 3 months after return date. This is the same for all of the EU, not just France.

When was it issued?

We travel out on 4th August, back on 19th August. Issue date is 15/08/23. Uk government website says this is fine but conflicting things online.

It has been clarified that it is 2 separate rules

  • on date of entry into France the passport need to less than 10 years old (look at issue date)
  • on the date you leave France the passport needs to be valid for 3 months (look at the expiry date)

The 3 months validity does not need to be within the 10 years calculated by the valid from date; although when the changes first came in there was a lot of confusion about it and some people were wrongly denied travel

Since the UK left the European Union, your passport needs to fulfil two criteria when you visit Europe's Schengen zone.

  • It must have been issued less than 10 years before the day you enter
  • It must be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave
For example, if you’re entering Spain on 5 August 2023 and returning to the UK on 19 August, your passport needs to have been issued after 5 August 2013 and be valid until 19 November 2023.

So technically you should be OK - but I'd be nervous of a french immigration person to be fair.

Thanks. I think technically I may be ok but I have shelled out on a fast passport that I can collect next week. Would rather be safe than sorry!

If the issue date is 15/08/13 then it runs out on 15/08/23. This is 10 years.

So no it won't be valid at all

The extra months added on aren't taken into account

This has been on the news for months

Good job you applied for another passport.

Enjoy your holiday you did well to trust your instincts

The valid expiry date is 15/08/23

NOT May 2024

The extra months between 08/23 - 05/24 are completely disregarded now

10 years from date of issue is what they look at
