Flight just cancelled - can you get on trains in France without bookings?

We were due to fly to Milan 7.15am tomorrow, flight's just been cancelled, no flights til Tuesday.

Am looking at alternative ways to get to our destination on the Italian Riviera, considering trains, but all the trains tomorrow and Sunday between Paris and Nice look to be booked on Trainline. Anyone know if we can just turn up and get train tickets on the day?

Can you fly into Munich? Easy train ride from there, you can book train tickets on bahn.de

Whereabouts on the riviera? Genoa perhaps?

Today was Bastille Day so the French will be out and about this weekend - travelling for their "grandes vacances".

you cannot get on a TGV without a reservation (we sell European rail tickets). There are often last minute cancellations so you could try at the station on the day…

Or Basel has direct trains to Milan.

Can you fly into Switzerland or Austria and catch a train or go via Brussels?

The Paris-Milan trains stop in Turin, that might be an option if they're not fully booked. There are French TGVs and Italian Frecciarossa trains that do the journey, but there are only four or five per day, between the two companies, and you definitely need a reservation.
