What parts of Greece have you been to and would you recommend them for a family holiday?

North Corfu
Kefalonia
Skiathos
all fantastic family holiday places

how old are your DC and what sort of accom are you staying in? Do you like AI with included sports and kids clubs? Will you be hiring a car?

also went to Crete and Rhodes with DC and was ok as stayed AI and had car. Crete though we found too large - places DC (teens) wanted to go were a 4-5 hour drive away! But went to Rhodes when they were at primary stayed AI and they loved it.

Lots of sniffiness about AI but it worked brilliantly for us when they were younger. I still refuse to cook, shop and clean on holiday but we go to B&Bs now!

I’ve been to Greece 30+ times and there’s so many places to recommend depending on the are of your children, their interests etc

We always went SC or B&B as eating out for me is one of the best parts about a holiday in Greece.

When my DS was at school, our favourite family holiday destination was Lassi, Kefalonia. Though he was as always happy with a pool and other kids to play with. Other great holidays we had were Agios Girdios, Corfu, Stoupa on the mainland, Elounda, Crete, Tingaki, Kos and Lindos, Rhodes.

Sycamorethanever · 15/07/2023 08:09

I think DD would have been happy w non AI - splashing about in the pool with her brother or a friend made on holiday is her ideal, but DS is always looking for something to do, so loved the organised activities and sports that only really AI offer. We made it bearable by still hiring a car and eating out for about half of the holiday.

Different kids like different things. We love eating out in Greece - although one of the things I’m looking forward to most this year is watching the sun set on the beach and then hitting some bars and getting takeaway gyros!

Oh Nidri, Lefkas is another place my DS loved.

Thanks for the replies. To answer a few questions -

It's a big family trip we're planning - 10 adults (between 29 - 65) and 2 pre-school kids.

We want to stay in 1 villa that can accommodate us all if possible.

We could hire cars but don't particularly want to.

We'd like to be able to walk/take a short taxi/bus ride to shops, bars and restaurants. Go on boat trips, spend time at the beach and do some sightseeing.

I like the look of Kefalonia but can't fly there directly from here (Scotland) so counting that out unfortunately.

Have a look at somewhere like Ixia, Rhodes. You’re very close to Rhodes Town and there’s regular buses but far enough out for it to have enough shops bars and restaurants if it’s own.

I live in south east so lucky enough to have choice of most islands from Gatwick or stanstead so forget others don’t have direct flights.

midsomermurderess · 15/07/2023 15:48

The Peloponnese. Pick up a car at Athens airport and drive across the Corinth canal. You could visit Mycenae and Epidaurus too. Someone mentioned Stoupa, that’s nice, lovely swimming and you can drive south and explore the Mani. People so often overlook the mainland and visit only the Islands.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 15/07/2023 15:49

Corfu? Green like kefalonia, but flights are usually cheaper and more frequent. It is a bit more touristy but Corfu town is lovely and there probably more to do than on kefalonia.

SamW98 · 15/07/2023 18:59

Another suggestion would be the coast near to Athens. Plenty of flights and lots to see and do.
Athens itself has so much history and culture and there’s a wealth of boat trips to islands such as Aegina, Poros and Hydra.

cherryassam · 15/07/2023 19:04

I think if you’re wanting direct flights from Scotland, you’re best bets are probably:

Corfu
Crete
Kos
Rhodes
Zante/Zakynthos

Tbh with your requirements, I’d probably find the villa first and work back from there

Lifesapurpledream · 15/07/2023 19:21

Shameless follow - also in Scotland with two pre school and love Greece. Love the Rethymnon area of Crete, although have always hired a car

TaylorTickets · 15/07/2023 19:40

We did Kos last year and loved it! Lots of boat tours, island hopping, saw dolphins, swam in the sea. Kids loved it and it was cheap! Already looking at going back to Greece next year

Justme68 · 15/07/2023 19:45

Zakinthos is nice went before the Covid started.

shivbo2014 · 15/07/2023 19:49

Skiathos is my absolute favourite place in Greece!

Skiathos is my absolute favourite place in Greece!

I’ve just come back. Loved it but personally wouldn’t go with kids as I found it much more suited to adults.

I stayed in town though so other resorts may be different.

We've been to quite a few islands, the best holiday we had overall was Naxos, it's a ferry hub so we did a fair bit of island hopping. The kids loved getting back in the early hours and going to a taverna for dinner, they ask played with the local children at the time. You can fly into Athens and get a smart express ferry from Piraeus.

The second get was Georgiopolis on Crete roughly half way between Chania and Rethymnon so you can visit quite a lot of the island easily.

Hi
I'm thinking about Kefalonia for May half term with my two 12 year olds.
Could you recommend a B&B that would suit us?
My kids sound like your son!
Thank you.

We stayed in San Lorenzo Village in Lassi. It’s with Jet2 so definitely worth a look.

We really liked lassi due to its close proximity to Argostoli (the capital) which is great for seeing the turtles in the harbour.
